Well we can sure agree on this, delta.

1.05 a lb is why so many farmers quit on catfish.

It's actually down a little off the peaks. We were right at $100 a case for 3/5oz not long ago.

But honestly, MS farm raised got out of whack years back compared to Vietnamese fish. I'm an accountant by trade and actually tried to get a deal with America's trade right after catfish went over $65 for a client. They balked.

That was over 5 years ago easy. US quality catfish has been over 60 for a long time now. He still selling fish US fish though. Superior is the brand.

I'm now hoping that's you.

Good luck. It's a rough business.

With me having zero knowledge of the industry… I absolutely understand what you’re saying.

You know what the cost is to get the fish to The distributor and are saying that they are charging too much markup. His argument can be easily summarized into “but that is the cost so you don’t know what you’re talking about”.

….which makes no sense at all.

I got 3 15lb boxes of Heartland irregular filets for 2.00 lb back several months ago at Heidelberg Piggly Wiggly. Great quality, just miss cut.

If you're ever in the area check out Charlie's in Ellisville. Charlie Rayner been frying catfish for 48 years. Best I know of.

Actually most quit in 2008 during the recession when it went to .60 a lb

It got up to 1.40 a lb during covid

Price wasn’t why a lot quit, it was because sales tanked when imports hit the market. Had the farmers been able to sell their fish even at the low price most could have weathered it, but many had no cash flow. Also a lot quit simply because they sucked at growing fish and it’s a stressful business that requires a lot of work and attention. Many thought it was “easy money”, and for a long time it was, and then found out the reality. In the 80s and 90s when we had 95% of the market and diesel was under 1.00 and feed was 200 bucks a ton with fish at .80 farmers raked in the cash even those who had poor production.

Look up the book Catfish Days by Mike McCall. The rise of the industry and what went on was incredible and a story most are unaware of.

Not me. Superior is owned by several Mennonite farmers in Macon, Ms

I sell all my fish to Country Select/Delta Pride in Isola, Ms
