This is Leach, what defense are you talking about?

He had a guy at Wazzu that improved the D bigly and then left to go to OSU or OU as DC.

DC is Zach Arnett, comes from SDSU, runs 3-3-5.
Talented up front, but thin in the secondary and will probably be pretty bad this year. Arnett seems to be a talented young coach and should shore things up in a year or two.

I'm not sure how good they will be but if they are only average we gonna win 6 or 7 this year.

It's just so unknown. Running a 3-3-5 scheme now which doesn't particularly fit out skill set. The "front 7" starters are pretty good, but absolutely no depth behind them. The 2-deep at CB are two freshmen and two sophomores. Starting strong safety is a walk-on. The secondary is completely unknown, but not looking great. The main problem with the defense this season appears to be depth. I hope I'm proven wrong.

Grinch was pretty good, but that's the exception in his career.

Honest answer:
Defense won't be good. New DC should be fine in time, but we'll have a ridiculously inexperienced secondary. Here's the defensive depth chart:
You've got a DL that has been around for a while, a lot of 4* guys but it's shocking they haven't played more over the years (which worries me--usually with 4* talent you'll get on the field at MSU).
At LB you've got Errol Thompson then two guys who haven't played much. Wheat is a JUCO transfer, has never played in the SEC.
Then our secondary is... really secondary. Londyn Craft is a walk-on. Marcus Murphy will be good. Others will be yikes. I think there's some talent here (I love Forbes but he's a true fresh, and Emerson will be a serviceable SEC starter eventually), but they're so young. It's gonna be a long year in the secondary.
If this defense finishes in the top 10 in the conference I'll be really happy.

The WSU D was 16th in 2017. Leach is hoping Arnett can be that guy at MSU.
They are going hard in practice and putting in the work. The question mark is the talent and depth. The defense is a 3-3-5 on paper, but it will look more like a 4-2-5 on the field or maybe even a 4-3-4 if the Bulldog Safety moves up for run support. In Joe Lee Dunn days, that guy was called the Dog Safety. Arnett and Leach changed the name to Bulldog Safety.

Their D-Line is thin, their Linebacking corps is worse, and their secondary is pathetic.
Add to those facts that they have a new first-time DC (they will say Arnett led SDSU defense, but Rocky Long was the actual DC), and they are transitioning to a new scheme.
PLUS - they will now be on the field waaaaay more than any other SEC D (Leach will score, or go 3 and out at a mind-numbingly fast pace).
Add it all up - State will compete for worst defense in the league.....and will likely win that competition.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in football. Leach's teams generally average 32 minutes or more in time of possession. They have very few 3 and outs.

Probably true

This is probably true.
But it's also true that Arnett played 4 years in Long's system and coached 9 years under him including 2 at DC. I imagine he has a pretty good grasp on how things worked.
