LSU's new AD personally vetted Jimbo for the LSU job when Saban left for the Dolphins

Was on his original list of 20 candidates that he personally vetted, and Jimbo made his final 5. Ultimately the committee decided Jimbo, only 39 at the time, wasn't ready to lead LSU and needed more head coaching experience, eventually deciding to instead hire Les Miles.
But it's very interesting how far back Ausberry and Jimbo's relationship goes, in light of his recent appointment as AD, no? Jimbo has a lot more head coaching experience now....
It's all mentioned in this old article about the search: LINK
It seems like personal relationships matter a lot to this new LSU administration. The more you think about it, Jimbo could make a lot of sense for the open LSU job given how far back he and Ausberry go.

The search had begun a few weeks earlier when the Dolphins opened communication with Saban. Ausberry had a list of 20 candidates he had vetted. It was quickly trimmed to about five serious candidates.
Six face-to-face interviews were conducted from Dec. 26-30: then-LSU assistants Bobby Williams and Jimbo Fisher; Nutt, who had just finished his seventh season at Arkansas; former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum; Miles; and then-Louisville coach Bobby Petrino.

There was a sense, one committee member said, that Fisher, then 39, was not ready to be a major college head coach. Also, Bertman insisted in hiring a sitting head coach.

Jimbo is also good friends with Woodward who y'all's media loving governor just treated like absolute shite and used Jimbo's A&M contract as a reason to fire him from LSU.

I've heard to keep an eye on Jimbo in this one.

I think Jimbo would be a great hire on these conditions:
1. He takes a lower salary knowing that A&M is still paying him $7m a year
2. He has to hire an offensive coordinator and not over manage the offense
3. He must keep discipline in the locker room and hold players accountable
Outside of that, he’s a fantastic recruiter and knows how to beat Alabama.

knows how to beat Alabama.
Which is the gold standard in selecting a head coach in the SEC.
Even when “knows how to beat Alabama” means you’re 1-5 with a single 4 point win.
He’s 100% the guy they should hire.

Our last NC coach didn't even know how to beat any SEC team, much less Bama.
frick getting a big name, splash hire unless it's Saban.
Give me someone who wants to make his name.

Redneck Jimbo would be a great fit at the barn or LSWho?. He'd win 8 or 9 games a year.

This doesn't bother me. In fact, it tells me Verge is even more qualified if he'd circled Jimbo as a candidate in 2004.

I actually agree. But I’m hearing he might be circling his name again in 2025. Keep an eye on Jimbo in this one.
