He is pretty terrible on defense.

For a guy who can score like Cam to have 17 DNPs while healthy tells you all you need to know about his defense regardless of what the stats say.

Eh, in the NBA, DNPs don't mean what they used to. And 5 of those were in the first 8 games of the season with two more games in that stretch with less than 1 minute of playing time. When you're starting Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and both average 37 and 36 minutes per game, that doesn't leave a ton of minutes for scorers to come off the bench. Not to mention there's also Ben Simmons, who sucks but still eats up a ton of minutes.

I'm not saying defensive rating is infallible or that Thomas is a good defender, but I don't think his lack of playing time is simply because he's not good at defense either.

When his coach specifically says he’s not doing the things he needs to do to stay on the court (which Vaughn said), in Thomas’s case I promise you he was talking about defense.

And this guy was sent to the G-League and has seen plenty of the bench all season. The Nets may need to evaluate their staff. With Big Ben still stinking up the joint they need to do a much better job of putting the better players on the court.
