Patrick Queen is the latest first rounder for the Tigers and he represents the new-age linebacker. Undersized by the old school standards, but elite athletically, Queen waited his turn at LSU before breaking out as a senior. Ironically, Queen was balanced out in the 2020 draft by a more traditional linebacker body type and skillset in Jacob Phillips. Devin White was a first-rounder in 2020, going fifth overall to Tampa Bay. Second-rounder Deion Jones (2016) and third-rounders Duke Riley (2017) and Kendell Beckwith (2017) also all were drafted within the first three rounds.
LSU has managed to find a way to balance the physicality of the linebacker position with the new premium being placed on athleticism. White arrived as a 260-pound running back. Queen arrived as a 190-pound athlete. Both left as Round 1 picks. There’s also an ability to develop and identify as opposed to simply out-recruit. Both Riley and Jones were 247Sports Composite three-stars coming out of high school

Duke Riley can't stay on the field for the Falcons because he's dumb as a box of rocks, not once has he ever made an instinctive play or sniffed out the play and beat the play to the point of attack before it developed
Riley is what I call a "combine FB Player", looks great in drills, but has little in the way of FB instincts to go along with his talent

Great and Duke Riley was one of, if not the, lowest ranked recruit in his class and didn’t play much until his senior year at LSU. The fact that he made it to the NFL at all was unexpected until his senior year. His teammate Deion Jones is doing pretty well in Atlanta so not sure what point you’re trying to get at here. That not every single former linebacker at LSU is awesome?
