It’s tough to know how accurate the info is we read on websites like this one; but the overwhelming majority of LSU fans speak of Mainieri as if he’s already departed the Tigers.

Would y’all say it’s a done deal he’ll be retiring?
Does he have a sizable contingency of “big money” supporters, or is the writing on the wall?

Just wondering how much of the chatter surrounding his exit is real talk or merely wishful thinking from the cyber diehards?

There is definitely talk of him retiring behind closed doors. Talk of him being forced to retire

Is his contract set to end this year/soon?

No. I think he has two years left on it, but there is a reason that I have said this offseason will be interesting. I expect both LSU and A&M to be looking.

It's pretty much understood that he's going to retire for health reasons...
quote:

Mainieri will have a fusion of the C4 and C5 vertebrae Nov. 16 (2020) as he tries to alleviate pain that has bothered him for two years and intensified in the last three months.

"I can’t continue this way," Mainieri said Wednesday night. "I have to have this surgery."

The initial pain appeared late in the summer of 2018. He lived with increasing discomfort throughout the 2019 season, placing his hands on either side of his neck to support it during games. He felt miserable in the dugout.

Mainieri had surgery last December (2019) to insert a prosthetic disc between his C5 and C6 vertebrae. The procedure, done by one of Mainieri's former players at Notre Dame, temporarily alleviated the pain in Mainieri's neck.

"It continued to get worse," Mainieri said. "I don’t have any choice."

Mainieri will have his second surgery performed in Baton Rouge later this month. He gave no indication it will affect his ability to coach next spring; Mainieri didn't miss a game last season after his first procedure.

He looks to be miserable in the dugout again this year as if the second surgery didn't work. He can barely turn his head to the bullpen when calling in a new pitcher. He walks more hunched over than ever before and he's developed what looks like a tick with his left shoulder and left side of his neck.

There are sports radio guys in BR talking of his retirement as well as some "insiders" on TD and on Twitter. These guys have all been right about a number of things in the past.

Not that I know of. I think pretty much everyone realizes that it's time to move on.

Thanks, TigerLunatik.

That (neck situation) sounds brutal.
Clearly his physical condition wore on him this year.

He’s a great coach who I’m sure LSU fans (and others) will remember fondly for all he’s done for the baseball program and the university.
Time to kick back with a good drink, hang with his family/grands, and enjoy the fruits of his labor.

I hope like hell they go after Michigan or Texas techs coach. Tony vitello is the only damn thing we have anymore. Life's miserable enough as a vol fan in the fall and the post season when we under perform per usual in March. We spent millions to have Kevin Steele be the damn interim coach for a month. Upgrade the freaking baseball stadium and give vitello a raise.

I would love to see A&M interview him, but I don't think he is even on our list. He's also too under the radar for Woodward at LSU

Every legit write-up I’ve seen from our so-called “insiders” says Texas ties are a must for whomever we hire.

Just to add my own opinion, I think he's taking a lot of pain medication which is affecting his decision making. He's made some absolutely bizarre decisions this season.

Just in game 2 vs A&M he pinch hit a guy that only has 4 hits all season in a tie ball game over guys that have been regular contributors. This guy is our 3rd string catcher. He's brought in midweek pitchers in during Friday games that are 2 run ballgames.

I've never understood that philosophy. Go get the best guy.

We have fans that want Todd Walker to be the coach. He's a fricking analyst for the SEC Network.

It can be important for recruiting and keeping top in-state talent coming to your school.

I agree with you.

But the sentiment exists that the new hire must be connected to TX HS travel ball—that Rice and Baylor made the mistake of ignoring that variable and are thus paying the price.

Hard to say for sure. Think 70/30. 30 to return either way.

I’m afraid he’s probably at the top of Woody’s list and based on his previous hires he can break out the checkbook.

Is White gonna pay 7 figures for a baseball coach? that’s the question.

I like Bakich and Tadlock (Tadlock a bit more) but I don’t think either fits a Woodward hire. But if we go based on that, that would also knock out Vitello and Godwin from our list so I don’t know if we can really expect the baseball hire to follow Woodward’s previous choices.

The early word is that it's O'Sullivan.

KOS and Corbin are really the only two coaches that would fit the mold of a “Woodward hire” and we aren’t nabbing Corbin.

God i hope not. your only trait in a coach can’t be national success. he’s gotta branch out a little and find a program builder. at least someone who knows how to recruit and can win soon if not right away.

I still trust in Woody to find the right guy though
