I dunno about this specifically but NFL teams are notoriously ornery about assistant coach contracts. There is a reason that you don't see much assistant coach movement in the NFL short of wholesale staff changes. Those contracts have specific "promotion" language and my guess would be the Saints are saying college DC is not a promotion.

I'm sure it'll get done because it's hard to come back from something like this but they probably chose to make it an issue to set a precedent.

He's been an incredible DL coach for the Saints. It sounds like they either just want to keep him that badly or that they're trying to evoke some clause to get more money IMO.

It's at Football scoop and SDS as well. I'm sure it will work out for you, but it might take a bit or you have to buy out his contract or the like

Might be a non-compete, although I'm not sure how that would hold when he's not going to a competing team.

Maybe the Saints front office is a little pissy at Orgeron.

I hadn’t considered that, but I guess it makes sense. Maybe it’s bad timing or they really like the guy as well. I don’t remember any issues hiring Joe Brady, e.g. Maybe the generic “offensive analyst” title was easier to work around though.

I don't think Brady was an actual on field coach was he? Could be wrong there.

I think you're right about that. The lack of movement of assistants in the NFL is significantly less than you see in college. Also have heard the Saints consider Nielsen a possible DC replacement if Dennis Allen were to get a head coaching gig. I suspect once all the available HC positions are filled, the Saints will sign off on him leaving. If not, and if they do offer Nielsen the DC job with the Saints, I don't think Nielsen would be upset. Of course I could be dead wrong about all of that.

He wasn't given a specific title or position to coach. But, he did say in an interview somewhere that he always had a play ready to go in case there was a communication issue from the booth. So, I take that to mean that he was on the field during games with a headset.

You’re probably right. He was listed as an offensive analyst, but I’m not sure how that title translates from college to the NFL with on field staff limits in college and such.

I do know he did a lot of film cut up of what other offenses were doing around the NFL and would discuss weekly with Payton.
