Only a matta of time lmaooo

Well. Alabama now has their version of a high school coach. Nate Oats coached HS basketball at Romulus HS from 02-13.

JackieTreehorn

The guy has been a head coach for a total of 4 years....  If this hire doesn't tell you all you need to know about the level of care at UA for basketball then nothing will.

quote:

jsmoove

Recruiting not going to be an easy thing at Alabama without a name.

quote:

AUCE05

I agree with Smoove. Bama needed a name. Some white dude from Wisconsin with 4 years experiance won't cut it. Should be fun.

quote:

Jake_LaMotta

Buffalo doesn't play big boy basketball. This is another mid major hire that doesn't mean anything. Will be shocked if this guy has any different results than Grant had. Awful hire.

quote:

Irons Puppet

Another Jelly of the Month hire. This happens when ADs are pressured by the clock. Might work out, but why do they take a chance?

quote:

Rhino5

Yeah Oats inherited a well-built team in Buffalo. Bruce Pearl inherited shite.

Alabama has talent, but if they canned Avery Johnson after 4 years, I'm wondering if Oats even has that long.

quote:

AUlock54

Tony Barbee and Anthony Grant had their mid major programs in the tourney as well. You can say this is a great hire if you want to but truly nobody will know. This guy has zero experience recruiting in the South East so I highly doubt he’ll be able to get some good players in a season or two. Then the fans will gripe in 4 years and fire him. Rinse and repeat until they get them a proven coach.

Bama hiring a high school coach who runs a fast paced, Mickey Mouse offense

quote:

cas4t

Could not have went more opposite than the Avery hire

This is hilarious

quote:

For the money bama clearly has to spend, it’s exceptionally underwhelming.

Has he ever made th tournament? Honestly don’t know

quote:

cas4t

Last I checked this board Matta was basically a done deal. Sorry I didn’t know the record of the coach from Buffalo. Going from Matta to Oats in a matter of hours is underwhelming, no matter his resume at Buffalo.

All in all, most of the responses from opposing fan bases were very cordial and positive.

Is the point that they didn't hire Musselman or what here?

From one mediocre coach to a slightly less mediocre coach...whoop whoop.

I was looking at Bama's roster last night and they have an impressive amount of young talent. They'll continue being a force in the SEC, for sure.

We also add a top 10 recruit at PG in Davison. We'll have some tough guys to replace, but we should have a pretty good and deep squad next year.

League should be really good in general.

Most knowledgeable CBB fans realize a mid major coach jumping into a major conference is a crap shoot. The list is endless, and the results always varied.

Recently...all of these guys are enjoying levels of success immediately.

Will Wade
Nate Oats
Musselman
Mike White
Bruce Pearl (going from Milwaukee to Tenn)

Then you had these flops:
Johnny Jones
Anthony Grant
Darrin Horn
John Pelphrey
Stan Heath
Kim Anderson (didn’t even come from a Mid Major though)
Jeff Lebo
Tony Barbee

The thread on our board that just got bumped grading the hire basically said

Pro : Everything we've read about him, his style, etc

Con : Mid major guys bust about as often as they hit, so who knows

Eh, to a certain extent but not all mid major coaches are the same. Some of those hires were reaches vs other that were more safe.

I think what the OP is saying as it pertains to the original Oates thread is:

Private eyes. They're watching you watching you watching you.

Proof that Bama needed to pay up and go after the best coach available. Nothing against Oats, but he is in over his head at Bama.

Two years in with three Senior contributors. In a down year in the SEC for experienced talent, you should expect that results. Throw in Covid and teams lack of a summer practice period and you can compound those issues. Remember he wouldn’t have made the post season last year, even with some very good talent left by Johnson. You Bammers sound like AU football fans in 2013, we will see how he does in the NCAAT.
