Nick Saban was introduced as Alabama's 27th head football coach. Be honest now. Did you think he would recruit well, win championships, or even stay as long as he has?

I was running a 102-degree fever that day. But it didn't stop me from getting out of bed and going down to our living room to watch the press conference:

Will retire as the greatest college football coach of all time. I'm blessed to be able to watch it

No. I don't think even the most realistic of Alabama fans ever expected he'd go on this kind of run.

I also didn't think Tuberville and Fulmer would be out of a job by the end of Saban's 2nd year either, or that Urban Meyer would consider leaving UF after 2009.

Although I had also told people that I thought he would have the Dolphins in the Super Bowl within 3 years

I must admit that I am surprised by the degree of success CNS has had at Alabama.

I failed to realize how great he is at his process and underestimated how dominant he could be. I also overestimated the resiliency of the rest of the league.

Since 2007: Only AU, LSU and Florida have won league titles.
I would have thought Georgia would have won twice as many as AU especially since they do not play Alabama regularly like Tennessee.

Pretty much thought so, yeah.

It's not so much that I didn't think he would stay, but i would've never expected him to dominate this long.

It's the "down years" of 10-3, 11-2, that impress me. I mean those are "up" years for all the other coaches. Hell, if Gus wins 11 this year, JJ will write him a huge check- even if we don't win the west.

I was working as an auditor and doing an inventory observation the day it was announced. I remember the warehouse manager was a huge Auburn fan and kept talking about how washed up Saban was and he wouldn't even have the success he had enjoyed at LSU. I was extremely happy after the Rich Rod episode but I didn't think Saban would achieve this level of success.

I was hoping for 5-6 years and two NC's. I also had no idea he was capable of stringing together so many #1 recruiting classes. I was just hoping for consistent top 5 classes.

I'm as shocked as anyone he is heading into his 11th season at Bama, with 4 NC's and 5 SEC titles under his belt and a roster that is poised to win one or two more in the next few years. It's been an unbelievable ride so far. I hope he has another 5-10 seasons left in the tank.

You meant to say God Bless Paul Finebaum, right? I still think the Alabama administration put him up to tearing her down when they had received word Coach Saban was interested in the position.

I'll be honest: I wasn't all that excited. Saban had won at LSU, but had been only mildly successful at Michigan State, and hadn't been too impressive with the Dolphins. I was afraid he had simply lucked into a great class of players at LSU and had ridden them to the top. I wasn't convinced he could replicate that level of success again. I was more excited about Rodriguez when everyone thought he was coming (thus, apparently, invalidating any football opinions I may have for the rest of my life).

Glad I turned out to have, uh, misjudged the situation a bit.

If any reporter wanted to scoop everyone else, all they had to do was check out Kristen Saban's Facebook page in late December 2006. She made 1-2 posts about how she was going to miss her friends in Miami. That was before Mal Moore even flew down there and nobody knew. Shows you the how social media has changed. Something like that would get retweeted in milliseconds.

I knew Saban would be the perfect fit for Alabama. I figured we'd get 1-2 NCs and a bunch of BCS bowls. Never in my life would I think we would have 4 with a chance to have a few more.

I honestly figured we'd end up on probation with him. After going through the shite shows Stallings and Dubose brought on I knew Bama was on a tight leash. I didn't know a lot about Saban except he was a great recruiter who used every grey area there was. I am glad I was wrong, and have learned to respect and appreciate the man in these years he's been at Bama.
