Won't be as smooth as many expect. Saban was a great mentor but performing as a head coach at Saban's level is a lonnnnnng stretch. Saban would have succeeded without Kirby Smart. Where would Kirby be without Saban?

Kirby spent the last 9 years calling Defenses in a system designed and run by Saban. Saban was the architect - Kirby his Disciple. Big difference. There are leaders and followers - don't kid yourself about this. You are one or the other but not both. If it was easy everybody would be doing it. It's not easy. Kirby's had it easy for 9 years. Now it's all on him. Imitation won't win Kirby a National Championship or even a solid winning career. He's got to do that himself with skills he already has - and I don't think he has them. That's a tough road only one in a million can conquer. Is Kirby really one in a million?

I don't think Kirby has the personality or mental toughness to match Saban's on field success - or even come close. No one knows exactly what's going to happen but I don't think Kirby can get Georgia to the promised land. In fact - I don't think he'll be able to match Mark Richt's level of success. Kirby's a great defensive coach. He's proven that. But - he hasn't proven anything else. Success as a first time Head Coach is very hard to forecast. I think Kirby will win the team over but I don't think he's got the smarts to cover all the bases all the time and become an Icon as the face of Georgia Football program in any similar way as his mentor Nick Saban. Ask yourself this question: Would Kirby Smart have the Georgia job today if he hadn't worked for Nick Saban? Of course not. He won the job on Saban's success not his own.

Georgia hopes Smart becomes Saban thru osmosis but it doesn't work that way. 10 years from now I don't think Kirby will still be the coach at Georgia.

One of Kirby's most significant jobs at Alabama was recruiting and he'll continue to excel at it but being a Field General and the Leader of the Team are things Kirby has never done.

I'm guessing you did not see Eason in their spring practice or the 93k show up to watch?

I think I'll reserve judgment until I see the team on the field.

I will never believe they actually fired Mark Richt for Kirby f'n Smart. If he is there for three years I will be shocked.

I hate to lose him at Bama, but Kirby will go down as the greatest coach in UGA history when all is said and done.

Your right, he's not Saban, but he's the closest thing out there,

ETA: sans Meyer.

Richt was a long time coordinator under Bowden. Smart was a long time coordinator under Saban. Saban is a better coach than Bobby. I like his chances anyway.

Who said UGA thinks its getting Saban 2.0? There's a lot of things we hoped he learned learning from the best for such a long time. He has came in, said all the right things, kept a recruiting class intact and even added more talent and is building a similar class for 2017.

I think its unfair to say that he won't be Saban because I don't think anyone would expect him to be. Nick Saban is a once in a lifetime-type coach.

We may not win a national title under Smart. But we weren't doing it before anyway. Might as well snag the guy who has been groomed by the best for a long time.

Kirby is going to be a bum and the enthusiasm will be gone fairly quick.

Saban's prodigies never amount to anything really either.

I think Kirby has proven to be a big chicken so far. And not the awesomely wonderful moderator kind, but this kind:

LSU hired a head coach from Stillwater. Georgia hired a DC from the Saban stable to learn how to be a head coach for $4 Million a year.

There is so much fail in this it almost hurts.

Your entire post revolves around Kirby Smart having as much on field success as nick Saban. Ok. I think we all agree. He probably won't. Who says he has to? And I love this little nugget:

10 years from now I don't think Kirby will still be the coach at Georgia.

Ok...now it is my turn to be Carnac.

"10 years from now Saban will not be the coach at Alabama!"

How's that for a prediction?

Miles had far less "pedigree" if you will. It worked out ok until Sabans players graduated. Amirite?

4 million is a pretty good deal. They could have Sumlin. I'll wait to pass judgment on the man but let's be honest. What he accomplished at Alabama is impressive. If he can accomplish a third of what he did with Saban, I'd say it is a success and I would think most UGA fans would agree.

I could call plays at bama and look like a genius with the talent they have. Kirby's recruiting was also propped up by the saban machine.

I guess no one should ever hire anyone to be their head coach unless their name rhymes with Satan.

Take your meds, child. I didn't fire anyone. I am not a UGA fan. I am an honest LSU fan and respect Kirby Smart. I think UGA made a good hire but, that remains to be seen. I'm not going to call him a failure before they even play a game.

Wow. Did you think at all before you posted? Of course Saban won't be at Alabama in 10 years. He's in his mid 60s now. Kirby is on his early 40s - and has exactly ZERO wins as a head coach at any level.

It takes a hell of a lot more than coaching for a great coach to be a great head coach. It takes personal skills that are beyond that of a mere mortal man - it takes SUPERMAN to become a great coach. I don't quite get the Superman vibe from Kirby. Do you?
