Among Hill, Bailey, Shrout and Maurer, I don't see how in the hell Gitmo is our likely starter.

I don’t know why we keep going to JG. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result

No, that's just an annoying ad campaign and quote widely misattributed to Einstein that oddly enough finds its earliest traceable roots in Knoxville:

quote:

The earliest strong match known to QI appeared in October 1981 within a Knoxville, Tennessee newspaper article describing a meeting of Al-Anon, an organization designed to help the families of alcoholics.

But to answer your question, the coaches go with JG because he is great in practice. Also, there was no one really behind him last season. As much as I love what I saw from Maurer and think he added a shot of energy that the team desperately needed at just the right moment he was also incredibly reckless with the football. This season he's returning with some experience that should help him compete. Hill wasn't available last season and HB only just arrived.

Prior to the extended fall practice, I'd have put 100 percent all of my money on the coaches starting JG. Now, the others may have a chance to unseat him but I still think the coaches will start the season with him. Coaches are usually conservative with the QB position and unless one of the others really, really shines in fall practice they will go with experience over raw potential. Hill is intriguing because he also brings experience to the table but I think everyone sees Harrison Bailey as the future and JG as a placeholder. I hope Hill is good enough to challenge that assumption because the more talent and experience we have the better but not a whole lot is known about him at this point.

Is Maurer with the team? I’ve searched but can’t find any updates - really feel for the guy and hope he can get his mental health straightened out

He's still with the team. His background/what he's been through is really rough. It would honestly be more surprising if he didn't have issues with depression but by all accounts he's been a great guy and teammate. His attitude and moxy alone uplifted the entire team last season and even though he and JG were in competition all year, Brian was the first guy to be there for JG when things were going badly. I haven't heard much on the mental health front since he spoke about it but I assume he's still receiving help and support since depression can be a lifelong battle with breaks in between. I can't speak highly enough of what I've seen from him.

Vols, cut your losses. Gitmo is your version of Felipe Franks: talented as hell and every now and then makes a play that takes your breath away. But in between those highlight reel plays is filled with stupid, soul-crushing, boneheaded mistakes that continually puts you in a bad spot. Find your Kyle Trask and go with him. He won’t make the “wow” plays but won’t kill you either.
