In 2012, Mississippi State was in the middle of searching for their next head coach in basketball after Rick Stansbury was fired.

The rumor has always been Kermit Davis was set to interview for the job and actually was on his way to Starkville when Scott Stricklin called and told him that the interview was canceled and they were hiring Clemson assistant Rick Ray.

Thank you, Scott. The Rebs appreciate your judgment there.

Where is your proof this actually happened?

After Stansbury was fired Stricklin didn't want to hire Kermit who had lots of baggage in his history. The Rick Ray hire was a political decision. Stricklin knew he wanted a bigger job and needed a Demographic hire on his resume. That's why he hired Rick Ray.

Well FatBoy22, considering I said "the rumor has always been," I wouldn't be able to provide you substantial proof.

But it's been said so many times from connected people in around the program when he was hired and after, I believe it to be 100% true.

Whether you do or not is your own decision.

In 2012

In 2011 Davis had a mediocre record at best at Mid Tenn. Nine Seasons without a single 20 win season, Sun Belt Conf champ, NIT, or NCAA tournament. He wasn't deserving of an SEC job at that time. A lot of Mid Tenn fans thought Davis should have been fired.

He hadn't really done much at MTSU at the time. He hadn't even made the NCAAT by that point

With that being said, only Stricklin would have hired a no name assistant over a current alum head coach.

As far as I understand he chose Ray over Kenny Payne as well which would have made even more sense....

Yes. He was paid. He was paid handsomely in Twinkies. He ate every single one too.
