I'm too young to really remember watching him live, but I've been so bored lately that I've been watching a lot of old SEC games and I'm kind of surprised: as maligned as he was, he seems to have been pretty talented and ran a great two-minute drill. Why were his numbers always so bad? Just outdated offense I guess.

Yeah early 90s offenses werent even close to today's, plus he wasn't a fill up the stat sheet kinda qb anyway. He was David Greene 10 years before David Greene.

Eric Zeier is kind of a forgotten QB of that era too: when offenses started to change, he made a big dent in the record books iirc

A lot of people remember 1992 national title Barker running a "don't screw it up" smash offense.

In 1994 he ran a sophisticated offense under a genius in Homer Smith and had a great year.

A philosophy of three things can happen when you throw and two of them are bad; coupled with defense wins championships.

Get a lead and hold it by crushing hopes and dreams

1994 Alabama: undefeated regular season, wins over three ranked teams, loses by one point to #6 Florida in Atlanta, gets rewarded with... The Citrus Bowl.

Finished 5th for The Heisman. Won The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

35-2-1 as a starter if I remember correctly, but early on the defense did carry him.

Missed some games in '93 due to injury.

Weren't a lot of other options back then - Sugar Bowl or else, basically.

That Ohio State team was stacked. Joey Galloway, Eddie George, Korey Stringer, Terry Glenn, Orlando Pace, Shawn Springs, Mike Vrabel.

That 94 Georgia-Bama was a classic. Both Barker and Zeier were great that night.

Much respect for him reeling in that slut puppy. Hopefully she doesn't step out in him like she cheated on her ex with 3 doors down.

Sherman Williams went off. His all-purpose yardage almost single-handily won us that game; 166 yards rushing and 155 yards receiving.

Barker rarely had impressive stats but was an excellent leader. If Bama was down by a TD or less in the 4th quarter I always felt like Barker would put them in position to win. Considering he only lost two games as a starter in his career, that faith was well placed.

I was surprised at how athletic and slippery in the pocket he was when under pressure.

The Miss St comeback game in Starkville and even the 2 minute TD drive against Tenn for the tie were amazing.

That, and we were not yet burned by a steady dose of erratic PKs that completely sucked away faith in all things kicking. Tiffin the Elder then Doyle (skip a year) and then Proctor (99% PKs made and 70+ FG % from 92-95) inspired as much hope in close games as anything else.
