I played Alabama a bunch, and I played for Alabama, so I had the opportunity to beat Alabama when I was at Mississippi State. So I can tell you what I told our players. There’s four things. One, you have to play physical, and if you play Alabama, you better play physical because you’re not going to outrun them. Two, you better make sure you’re able to run the football. They make you one-dimensional to throw the football; they have too good (caliber) of players up front to put pressure on the quarterback. Three, you have to win the kicking game somehow, because they’re very good in pressuring the punter and blocking extra point, field goals and punt returns and kick returns. Four, make (Nick) Saban holler on the sideline, because then you know there’s something wrong.

I don't know why but that last line made me laugh.

Interesting enough, sherrill never coached against Saban at Alabama. Croom got the last win against Saban in Saban’s first year. Game was in Starkville and Bama’s QB threw a 100 yard Pick 6 right before half.

Nick was hollering up 30-0 against state with 26 seconds left.

I think he was 0-4 against Saban's LSU teams.

He coached against Saban at LSU though. Closest he got to beating him was an OT game in 2000

Bama was a little down during the Jackie era, but he did run down their throats and they could not stop it.

I disagree, when Saban is calm on the sideline it’s usually a sign that he knows his team is in trouble and trying to keep his team from getting over anxious and making mistakes.

Yep...after that pick 6 by John Parker Wilson, Bama mailed it in for the rest of the season. Did not win another game until the Independence Bowl against Colorado.

The best way to win against Bama is to pay off the refs to constantly call penalties on them and to overlook penalties and illegal plays by the your team. It worked for the Vols and other teams.
