It was a mistake to do this before the playoff expanded

I don’t really like adding Texas and OU but even putting that aside, why not wait until the playoff expanded? Now there’s probably going to be at least some challenge to 12, which the SEC pushed for, because other conferences (correctly) worry the SEC will end up with 6 or more teams every year.

If you’re the SEC why wouldn’t you wait until your preferred playoff format is passed, THEN expand the conference.

4=2

12=6

What’s the problem?

Every report out is the other conferences are now balking at 12 teams.

So we take their best teams and make all the playoff decisions ourselves.

The TV money will make the 12 team playoff go through. Money always wins.

I don't know why you got the downvote --- you are correct.

People are considering Sankey a bad faith actor in CFP talks. I think they pause they new 12 team playoff now.

I still think it happens but not until 2025.

Think about it, one of the four members who drew up the plan is Big12 guy --- and I am sure he is now against it.

The SEC, AAC, and ESPN are running the show right now. They'll get the playoff. Bowlsby won't have a conference to be in charge of in a few months.

It's a done deal. Not if, just when. That is exactly why the 2 refugees can head east in their quest for continued football relevance.

You will routinely see 3 loss teams in the 12 team playoff. SOS will run that show like never before.

Good.

Twelve teams is too many to begin with. Four has been too many in most years of the CFP so far.

I think it still happens, but now they wait until 2025 when the broadcast/streaming rights are up.

Oh the irony. It makes a lot of sense for the ACC, Big10, and Pac10 to pull support for a 12 team playoff if you think about it. Worst case Bama, OU, UGA, LSU, UF, AU, A&M fight for 1 spot, maybe 2. Best case is SEC Champ is a 2 loss team and gets shut-out altogether.

Expand enough and you can have your own playoff. Cut out the middle man.

Good. I would much rather watch competition between teams rather than one team dominate, i.e. Bama, OU, tOSU. Give those teams some real opposition week in and week out and we will see much better competition all around.

How do you stop that from happening? Invite more cannon fodder?

The 4 team playoff guaranteed you would be seeing the best of the best more often than the BCS. What do you think 12 teams guarantee?

Before SEC expansion, it was probably 4 and even 5 most years anyway. In some ways it could really screw things up. What is the shape of this expanded playoff? Will it still include the Big12? What will the shape of the SEC look like? If the design rotates through the entire conference in two years, SOS goes way up. We will really be beating each other up. Who determines who gets what ranking? Will the across the board animosity depress rankings? Got to play out before calling this imo.

The real question here is what is the end game? Adding TX and OK is conference expansion. Trying to add Clemson/FSU and other big boys is trying to start a cascade to break away from the NCAA, or at least form a new football division. What would be the form and participation in that kind of setup?

The risk that the Big Ten would strike first was too great. They had been approached by UTA and OU 2 years ago but refused to consider OU for membership. They’re coming up on the end of their TV contract and might have been influenced to take OU. Apparently, Commish Sankey decided to strike while the iron is hot.

I don't think it matters to tell you the truth.
