Isaiah Wilson: I decommitted from Alabama in 2016 because Nick Saban didn't give me a hug

This week on the Bus, the Boys welcomed Isaiah Wilson, the Titans’ top draft pick in the 2019 draft. Wilson was a 5-star recruit out of New York City’s Poly Prep and a monster on Kirby Smart’s offensive line. At 6’6” and 354 pounds, his size and strength made him a lock for a high draft pick and he was taken 29th overall despite only being a redshirt sophomore and 20 years old at the time.

On the pod, Isaiah dropped this gem of an exchange:

“I was committed to Bama for a long time,” he said.

“What happened?” Taylor Lewan asked.

“Nick Saban didn't give me a hug.”

“I care about the little things,” Isaiah elaborated. “I'm thinking in my head, I just committed, this is now my coach. You know what I mean?”

“Is it normal to get a hug?” a clearly stunned Taylor responded.

“I don't know, man,” Isaiah said with a laugh. “I just committed, I was hoping I could get one. I put my arms out and [inaudible] I was like dawg …”

Instead of a hug, Saban … extended his hand out for a handshake.

Isaiah de-committed from ‘Bama in one flat second. Incredible. Because Nick Saban wouldn’t give him a hug.

Ed Orgeron is hugger. Any 5* stud OT's out there, you remember that.

I don't know. Maybe Saban used to give new commits a hug until an unfortunate incident where the prospect wasn't expecting it and thought it was weird and decommitted.

No he genuinely doesn't care about people, only what they can give him. That's been the story his whole career. You've heard that from many of his former players and assistants. He's just an a-hole.

Is the Harbaugh story in here?

Shut down his Michigan recruitment because Harbaugh wore cleats in his house and refused to take them off

Got any quotes from former Alabama players saying that? I can't remember any, let alone "many". I probably just missed them though - be glad to hear them now.

We have, on the other hand, heard a lot of the opposite from his former players at Alabama.

Bama got Leatherwood instead of Wilson.

In 2017 during the NCG, Leatherwood came in against UGA after an injury and dominated (better than the starter).

And even better news for Bama, Leatherwood is returning for his senior season.

I'd say that Bama didn't blink after Wilson decommitted and did as good if not better.

I wonder if Kirby had to tuck him in every night and read bedtime stories to keep him from transferring.

Coach O loves his players.

Lou Sabah does not.

Lou actually tried to kill one of his players while failing in Miami. True story. A player was on the ground convulsing and Lou came up and started kicking the shite out of him and then dropped a People’s Elbow on his face.
