I want to thank everyone for their participation in this thread. Looking thru the comments it seems most believe it was indeed PI.
thank you everyone for the insight and i hope you all are having a blessed week

He did not contact the receiver before the ball got there. Therefore, not PI

That pissed me off. We don't need LSU refs to help them out. We can lose fine on our own

And still no clip from the obvious, but uncalled, pass interference by State in the end zone on the first drive. You got a split in the response on the posted clip, but are you afraid to post a clip where the missed no-call was clearly wrong, as opposed to a judgment call that could have gone either way? Refs make mistakes and miss calls. Your example isn’t a good one because it could have gone either way. The one that is obviously wrong you apparently don’t want to acknowledge because it’s didn’t benefit LSU.

I know this is a troll thread, but it is a fairly interesting call. I thought it should have been a PI when I first saw the replay during the game. Not sure now.
If the ball was thrown better.. say it was a foot higher and didn’t hit Chaisson in the back of the helmet, I don’t think it would have looked bad at all. Just would have looked like shitty coverage (by an edge rusher.. to be expected).
The play is basically textbook face guarding, which isn’t a penalty in the NCAA.
That said if they had thrown the flag I would not have been surprised at all and probably wouldn’t have been able to summon any outrage about it. Judging by the number of LSU fans in this thread saying the same, this is a pretty shitty troll.

yes, contact before ball arrived.

No look back = no play on the ball, you can't significantly contact the receiver before the ball arrives if you aren't presenting as attempting to exercise your equal right to catch the ball.
He doesnt have to look back to play the ball.

the question I have is how is this technique (for defense) supposed to work. I see this all over in college and so rarely in the Pros and I just don't get it. is the CB trying to block the QB's line of sight to their receiver and make them look to another option? or is this defense dependent on the referee's simply not wanting to call PI every time this happens?
For one, that's not a CB, that's Chaisson the DE/LB in coverage. It's pretty amazing he stayed with him that far in to the route.

If wr stops, he would have run him over and got the call. Pretty good coverage for a DE either way.

No because lsu will always get the call that benefits them.
It’d be nice if this were ever true, but I don’t think I’d feel too great about it, either.

No it wasn't, but it wouldn't have made a difference. State could not match LSU offensive output. And you know this man!

It’s close, but they’re moving in the same direction and face guarding in and of itself is not a foul.

yeah you do.
RULES
quote:
Defensive pass interference is contact beyond the neutral zone by a Team
B player whose intent to impede an eligible opponent is obvious and could
prevent the opponent the opportunity of receiving a catchable forward
pass. When in question, a legal forward pass is catchable. Defensive pass
interference occurs only after a legal forward pass is thrown (A. R. 7-3-8-
VII, VIII, XI and XII).
RULE 7 / SNAPPING AND PASSING THE BALL FR-79
It is not defensive pass interference (A.R. 7-3-8-III and 7-3-9-III):
1. When, after the snap, opposing players immediately charge and
establish contact with opponents at a point that is within one yard
beyond the neutral zone.
2. When two or more eligible players are making a simultaneous and
bona fide attempt to reach, catch or bat the pass. Eligible players of
either team have equal rights to the ball (A.R. 7-3-8-IX).
you have to be making a play on the ball to be exercising your equal right to the ball. Im not sure what you mean by faceguarding, but If you simply mean a defender who is facing the receiver with their back toward the QB, no thats not against the rules, but the line there is whether or not you make contact with the receiver.
This contact is not allowed because the implied intent of that contact is to hinder the receiver. whereas if a defender can see the ball and there is contact incidental to him attempting to catch the ball, that contact has a different intent, and that different intent - to catch the ball - is not against the rules.

As a biased observer, the defender is entitled to his own space.

Probably
That said WR didn't stop and get run over
The receiver never tried to get back to the ball, so I would say that is why it was not called.
