ACC's John Swofford to 'protect' teams from FSU's title-game financial woes

AMELIA ISLAND -- ACC commissioner John Swofford wants Florida State to be the last school in his conference to struggle with finances coming out of the ACC's football championship game.

As part of a nearly 30-minute conversation with reporters Thursday morning at the conclusion of the ACC spring meetings, Swofford said he wanted to "protect" his member schools from experiencing the types of financial loses that FSU saw in December.

The Seminoles lost about $440,000 in ticket expenses after last December's ACC Championship Game against Georgia Tech in Charlotte, N.C. FSU won the game 21-15, earning an automatic bid to the Orange Bowl. The matchup featured a 6-6 Yellow Jackets team that backdoored into the contest after North Carolina was unable to participate due to a conference-imposed postseason ban, due to NCAA sanctions.

The Tar Heels had officially won the Coastal Division through a sequence of tiebreakers. FSU fans, saving for a then-anticipated trip weeks later to the Orange Bowl, were mostly uninspired by the Yellow Jackets' appearance and stayed away from the game. Tickets went for as little as $5 on StubHub.com the week before the contest.

The ACC should just go to campus CCGs.

Vandy.

They can't even walk the quarter of a mile to their own stadium.

False, if Vandy were ever good enough to go to the SECCG. Fans would show up.

We had 35,000 at the Liberty Bowl in 2011 and 55,000 at this past years MCB so I'm pretty sure VU could make the number work

Plus there are actually more VU alums living in Atlanta than there are in Nashville.

GT backdoored twice. Miami was suspended, which put NC in there. Then NC said frick it, let's suspend ourselves because this championship means nothing, and get over our own violations and move forward.
So, the 3rd best team in the division got to play for the ACC.

That's a new definition of "backing into" a championship.

That saddest part is they almost won.

Even if Vandy brought no one, their opponent would likely sell it out

No. Even Vanderbilt would easily sell out their allotment of champ game tickets.

Exactly...

More of an indictment on the ACC than anything else. Their "historically best FB program" only sold 6,000 outta 10,000 tix thru the University. Their fans say...Well we could buy them thru Stubhub for $10...

If you can get tix thru Stubhub for $10 for a CCG you got major probs as a Conference...

I seriously wonder if Arkansas even had half of that in 95.
