Notre Dame has zero conference championships.

That's more than made up for by their win total, winning percentage, and quality of opponents faced. Notre Dame didn't rack up those wins against cupcakes. They went out and played the best of the best. When they were dominant in the late-80s/early-90s, Notre Dame frequently took on other powers of the period such as Florida State and Miami.

It can be tough to quantify a "blue blood" program. Notre Dame has been mildly above average for decades but before that they were easily one of, if not the, best programs in college football for sixty some odd years.

It is a matter of perception. Now a days people don't think of Texas as a powerhouse unless they are from Texas. That isn't a knock on the Horns, that is the reality of the situation. They just don't have the respect to claim a seat at the big boy table right now.

Darell Royal and Texas were the epitome of having 3 crappy or mediocre seasons and then a good one.

Darrell Royal won 78 percent of his games at Texas. That doesn’t jibe with your claim.

quote:

He came into Texas in 1957 and took about 4 years . And then had a descent team in 61.

Had a top 4 finish in 1959. Went 10-1 in 1961. A tad better than “decent.”

quote:

68,69,70, in 1971 he has a good year followed by 72

That’s five years of great football. Three mediocre and one good one, huh? What happened to that pattern? Epitome?

quote:

In 1973 it goes off the rails again

An undefeated conference championship and Cotton Bowl berth (his sixth in a row) is off the rails?

He went 10-2 in 1975.

He finished in the AP top 5 nine out of 20 seasons at Texas and won 11 conference championships.

Next.

quote:

Akers and Williams have some descent years

Akers was the coach in 1977. He finished in the AP top 5 three out of 10 years and lost two national titles in the Cotton Bowl.

Texas hasn’t “owned” A&M after scholarship limits came into play. Schools like Nebraska and Texas made their records off of unlimited scholarships

Did A&M not also have unlimited scholarships? I rag on you a lot, but you weren't strapped for cash or anything.

The reason the record is fairly even since that time is because you won 10 of 11 games under Jackie Sherrill and R.C. Slocum. And we all know how that happened (you were running a rogue program and paying players).

Before those two crooks got things rolling, the record was 7-4 post-limitations and 12-5 after your last probation.

That's 19-9 in favor of TEXAS, which at 67.8 percent is slightly better than the all-time advantage of 67.2 percent.

Nope, that would be a typical Auburn coach you are thinking of. Royal had 9 top 5 teams in 19 seasons & four others that were ranked 6th-12th. In other words >66% were top 12 teams & two thirds of those were top 5.

quote:

And then had a descent team in 61

That "decent team" would be top 5 in Auburn history. Outscored opponents by 3+ TD's & finished #3 with a single 6 point loss, ending the season beating Ole Miss during their greatest run ever.

quote:

He then had about a 4 year run with some good squads up to '64

You can't count, but that following three year run had a NC, all top 5 squads & only lost 2 games out 33. Good? That would be the greatest three year run in Auburn history.

quote:

1971 he has a good year followed by 72. In 1973 it goes off the rails again

'71-'75... 4 conference championships, all ranked teams (#3, #12, #8, #7 & #17) If that's off the rails, sign me up.

quote:

followed by a good year in 1977.

That "good year" in '77 was undefeated & ranked #1 til the loss to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl for the National Championship. But unfortunately you are wrong again, Darrell Royal didn't coach that team.

This would be the perfect example of a poster that doesn't know CFB or is simply dumb as frick.

Literally has nothing to do with what I said, you salty fan of a has been program. But since you brought up those numbers... by all means tell me more about that record against “blue bloods” . Who was in that list? Texas is 15-16-1 against Bama, Usc, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Michigan. Something like 62-48 vs Oklahoma. In that series, OU only won 11 times from 1900- 1947, and wasn’t exactly a “blue blood” at that point.

Fun fact: Where was Darrel K. Royal born, and where did he go to college?

Hint: it's north of the Red River.

He's from Waurika, Oklahoma, and played football at OU.

I'm sorry, he's from Hollis. Which formerly was in a Texas county before a boundary dispute was resolved :-)

He also turned down the Oklahoma job after Wilkinson left, maybe again after Fairbanks.

We are a blue blood though a lot of that old money prestige has been tarnished by a decade of sub par play. Shouldn’t ever happen- recruiting base, $, academics, history, etc.- but it does happen to even the best programs.

Maybe Herman isn’t the answer but we have a very talented and deep roster for this next season. The fact that we expect the best (anything less than a 10 win regular season w/ a conference championship would be a disappointment, though this feeling is starting to become the norm) speaks to our collective belief that we are close to cycling back as one of the top programs in the game.

Or we could be like aggy and pat ourselves on the back for keeping it within two scores of Bama. “B-b-b-b-but SECSEC, r-r-r-right guys?? Derp.”

They signed more than anyone, with fair margin under Stallings. The s holly disadvantage is just another aggy fantasy/fish camp dream.

With your brain I can see the issue.. think at a higher level maybe?

You left out 10-4 vs Nebraska.. overall well over .500, I would think a fan of a program that crawls in @ below .400 would see that as a positive.

I was going to say that he conveniently left out Nebraska.
