There's clear separation between 8 Nebraska and 10 LSU (thanks Jerry, Mike and Curley) and 11 UGA going by this list, which I think is better than using just winning pct which would put FSU and Miami close to the top 10. Tennessee is now closer to LSU & UGA than to Nebraska after having only two decent seasons in 12 years. Tennessee seems like Michigan in that they piled up a ton of success in the olden days and then made a comeback in the 1990s before petering out again.

Tennessee used to be really, really good.

Modern recruiting has destroyed them.

It will be interesting if they ever get close to what they were.

I mean they had a great run from about 1985-2007 iirc, i'd say that's modern

Not anymore.

They're part of the middle-class now.

This has absolutely nothing to do with our issues, why do you simps keep trotting this line out?

The state of Tennessee is producing exponentially more talent than it ever has. That just happens to coincide with a period that we had two IRL retards as ADs.

Lyle Allen Jones was able to assemble a top 10 roster at Tennessee ffs

they never have been, and that's not an insult. There's only about 7 or 8 "blue blood" programs and they aren't one.

Lol we were absolutely a top 8 program prior to the year 2000.

If you're trying to claim Memphis as a slam dunk area Tennessee football should dominate, I'm not buying. Yeah, Nashville has gotten better HS talent, but Tennessee can't be elite again by only getting Nashville.

They had a great run a lot longer than that

Middle Tennessee (Nashville, Murfreesboro, Clarksville) is one of the fastest growing areas in the country, and they’re routinely producing 10+ 4*s per year to go along with the 3-5 that East Tennessee has every season.

LSU can’t be elite with just Louisiana talent, not sure why you felt the need to make that pointless distinction. VOLS are more than capable of going into Georgia and the Carolinas for players.

Good stuff, I might move LSU and GA to tier 2.

Michigan's postseason record is awful; unlike some, I think their 1997 NC is more legit than Nebraska's: the AP poll was more prestigious, they curbstomped a common opponent Nebraska struggled with (Colorado) and Neb had the bs "flea kicker."

Texas maybe should be kicked to tier 2 now as well

I disagree with this. They have made one shitty hire after another as head coach because they have made one shitty hire after another as athletic director because they have made one shitty hire after another as President of Tennessee.

I am thinking the Board of Trustees has got to be fricking with them. They have had an interim president for over a year now, Foolmer is the AD and Jermy is the coach.

Hey but they finally beat Muschamp for the first time ever, so I guess it is all good in the neighborhood.

It's not enough to carry a P5 program but it's also not the reason why you've been struggling the last 10+ years. It's hiring poor coaches as you stated.

Agree with all this BUT Fulmer has been far better than our previous two ADs. He is the only one that has at least shown the willingness to spend big $$ as evidenced by the assistant pool Pruitt has to play with and the contract he gave Barnes.

Tennessee and Nebraska will continue to fall in these rankings.

Most people go with the 8 of:

Bama
ND
OU
USC
OSU
Mich
Nebraska
Texas

in some order as the first tier/"blue bloods."

Frankly Nebraska and Texas seem dangerously close to making it a top tier of only 6 to me but they probably have a little more cushion left. Tennessee was maybe in there but they were at the fringe to begin with an they have blown through any cushion they had the last dozen years.

Yes I’m well aware it’s not enough to carry a program. But there are at least 12-15 legit SEC talents in Tennessee every season, and VOLS have always been able to go into Georgia and get ~5 solid to great players per annum.

They can easily build ~60-70% of their class with good players from Tennessee and Georgia, this recruiting disadvantage VOLS have is a myth

Horseshoe crabs are true blue bloods. They use hemocyanin instead of hemoglobin to carry oxygen through their blood. Because the oxygen binding site in hemocyanin uses copper instead of iron, their blood is blue.
