Is Pete Golding the coach in waiting at Alabama?

For some reason, which is completely baffling, Saban loves the guy. He's one of the worst DC I've ever seen but is still at Bama year after year. I'm starting to wonder if, behind the scenes, Golding has been named the coach in waiting and is being groomed to take over.

That's what I've heard.

He definitely hasn’t been groomed.

Yes. I’m hearing it will be announced in January.

You can say that again. I know he's this great recruiter but it doesn't matter how good you can recruit if you can't turn it into results on the field. If Saban loves him so much, wish he would just demote him from DC to recruiting coordinator.

He apparently drinks and drives enough to where it'd be an easy blackmail.

We've talked about this ad nauseum.
A few years ago (because of offensive trends), Saban wanted to move to a 4-2-5, or more likely a 3-3-5 base defense.
Pete Golding was highly regarded for that scheme, and was brought in to help the long-term transition.
Either the scheme doesn't work (not likely) or Golding just plain sucks (more likely) at player development and/or coordinating an actual defense using it.
Saban will probably help Golding find another spot somewhere, and bring in someone else to improve on this concept, or abandon it completely.
TL;DR — Golding had knowledge of a scheme that Saban wanted to implement. Either this scheme or Golding himself is no bueno. It's time to move on with one, or both.

Alabama's defense has definitely been ho-hum over the last 2-3 years. The talent is there but something seems to be missing.

This is the only appropriate explanation. This needs to happen.

By whom? His resume is as thin as it gets. The only reason Alabama didn't freak out at the hire was because "Saban's got this. It's his defense anyways."
But let's just admit what this was. Saban was tired of having his assistants poached, so he made a lazy hire.

Golding came to Alabama in 2018.
In 2017, he was running this at Texas-San Antonio, after a stint at Southern Miss and FCS Southeastern Louisiana.
That final UTSA defense ranked seventh in the entire FBS, allowing just 288 ypg.
While at Southern Miss they won their division, and at SEL they lead their conference in total defense.
Again, I'm not defending the guy, but he was known for this system. I think what we're seeing currently is more of a Golding/personal issue, and not an Xs-and-Os issue (but I could be wrong).

Guess we will find out soon enough, Golding will be gone after the bowl game

No one had heard of Golding until he popped on Saban's radar. Alabama didn't compete for Golding's services unless Tusculum made an effort to re-acquire his services. I vaguely recall him being a candidate for Oklahoma's DC one year, but since his arrival, I don't think he has had a single job offer.

Maybe he is good at waxing poetic about defense on a whiteboard. But competent DCs do not continue to put safeties on fast WRs repeatedly (Hellams on Hyatt) or drop defensive lineman in coverage against a team that is exclusively running the ball (auburn), or puts 12 men on defense after a timeout.
This is well beyond personal problems (of which we know he has).

2020 and 2021 the defense was at least adequate. This season's D was supposed to be Golding's best, and it was significantly worse than the previous two seasons. Completely underwhelming by any standard, much less the big expectations coming into the season. Indefensible.
