Is it me or did Bowl games use to be a bit more special and crowded?

Bowl games used to mean more. Playoff games are the main thing now. It is what it is.

Playoff killed bowl games...For some reason made them seem even more exhibition than they used to be.

Not since the BCS days.

Name a bowl game that wasn’t a National Championship game that has mattered since 2004.

Playoff makes it seem pointless. Haven’t watched much this bowl season

Saban said it. I said it. The playoffs were bound to have this effect.

HDTV

Bowl games haven’t changed much in significance for vast majority of teams. Have always been meaningless if you aren’t in the top 4.

The Rose Bowl was packed and loud. It meant something to those teams

Has nothing to do with playoff. Has to do with the quality of the television broadcast and the multiple ways to watch games from the comfort of your home.

I think there are some early warning signs that CFB is a bubble that might burst one day

For starters it’s becoming gradually more regionally centric to the south and fan interest in going to games is at the lowest I’ve ever seen. Then you’ve got other X factors like the CTE stuff lingering.

Ratings are super strong but it will be interesting to see what the future of the sport is at the turn of the next decade.

The CFP has rendered them as consolation games and, truthfully, it's indirectly destroying them and the interest in college football generally.

I would like to interject and say that the bowls were meaningless before the playoffs

Number of bowls and corporate sponsorship killed bowl games. They aren’t for the fans in attendance anymore.

This is correct. CFB has already just about lost the West Coast. CFB needs a good USC or UCLA stat.

How does the playoff change the significance of a number 8 vs 9 bowl game? Was always meaningless

I think you need to start having playoff games in the North. Got to get them involved and draw some interest.

Disagree. Before the playoffs the NY Big 6 were prestigious. Now they are just like any other bowl game.

When you have half the team sitting out AND half the stadium filled for the freaking Sugar Bowl it’s something other than high def.

Why were they “prestigious”? Because people acted liked they were? Were still meaningless
