Is Gus actually a good coach?

Most Barnies say “no”, but Gus gets them to Atlanta every now and again and beats Bama way more than LSU could ever dream of.
Sure Auburn has a lot of “down years”, but Gus can make it happen when he gets a good thing going.

With SAban and Bama the bench mark, not sure how they improve if they fire gus...

Gus is a good but not great coach

Overall he's a pretty good coach. Program is in great shape with academics, discipline and facilities He can be a great gameday coach and he can be downright awful, and there lies our frustration.
I believe the program is as stable as it's ever been, though.

Good head coach bad OC. His downfall is he can't separate the two. I have no doubt Auburn would be a yearly 10-11 win team if he would hand over full control of the offense, but he won't

Gus is a fine program manager and a talented Xs and Os coach, but he can also be extremely stubborn and has tunnel vision.
A lot of the problem stems from him not being paid huge money to be a program manager (which he's good at, and will presumably get better at). He was paid for something he's not doing - fielding strong offenses.

Good, yes. Great? Probably not.
I personally believe he would not still be at Auburn had he not beaten Alabama as much as he has.

Gus has a 53-27 record at AU.
His 1st season, 2013 was the highlight going 12-2, SEC champs. From there on its been a model of mediocrity consistency.
2014:8-5
2015:7-6
2016:8-5
2017:10-4
2018:8-5
2019:9-4
Gus does get props for having a 3-4 record vs the Crimson Tide.

Gus is a good coach. Auburn would be stupid to fire him for an "up and comer."

He was a good offensive coordinator, but hes an interesting HC.
He never seems to really try and recruit the QB he really needs to run his offense.
At his heart we wants to run an option offense.
But I keep thinking he takes the best QB he can find and just tries to figure it out later.
So he hires an OC he thinks will work with his QB but then he can't get out of the way.
He needs to jsut lean into it and get the best athletic QB he can find who can still throw the ball.

I'll give Gus credit for this:
College football has never really enforced the illegal man downfield rule and he exploited the shite out of it. This is not a knock on him. He smartly took full advantage of this.

As an LSU fan, I hope he continues to be the Auburn HC for the next 15 years.

Gus is good when he has the right personel. He needs a great offensive line, a work-horse running back, a change of pace small, fast runningback, and a quarterback that is a dynamic runner. That's what he had in 2010 (as Auburn's OC) and 2013.
In recent years, he's struggled to get the offensive linemen he needs, and has attempted to run his offense through more pocket passer type QBs (though Nix can run). Kerryon Johnson went off at the end of 2017 and carried him with dominating running efforts.

quote:yeah if this got taken away....not sure what would be left in the cupboard. the analysis videos i've watched point out that he's running first gen rpo concepts, that he hasn't really evolved. i think rodriguez is getting the same way. starting to look a little dated. the tricky thing is with these two, those plays still work every now and then so it's enough to mask the overall problem. if orgeron can evolve, there's no reason why those two can't also.

62-37 is not that good, two fluke Bama wins aside.

Oh and he has 3 wins vs. Bama, BTW. None of which were "flukes"

The ‘17 win was definitely not a fluke but “kick six” and last year were pretty flukey. It’s okay with me if you want to celebrate Auburn’s mediocrity under Gus. Enjoy it!
