Is Cuonzo Martin underrated as a HC?

I know his previous 3 years have been underwhelming but they have seemed to put it all together this year. His overall record isn’t bad either with a sweet 16 birth at Tenn.
Is he underrated or is this year a fluke?

Remeber Tennessee had made the tournament 6 years in a row before him. He's not terrible, but every year at Tennessee, his teams seemed to take the first half of the year off altogether.
I don't think he's underrated or overrated. He will continue to have some good teams, but most teams will be totally irrelevant.

I think he’s rated just right. Decent coach but a tier below guys like Pearl, Barnes, Oats, Cal.

His brand of basketball is horrifically boring to watch
He took a team with jarnell stokes, jerrone Maymon, and trae golden to a play-in game
He’s a good coach, nothing special

He’s good enough to keep around until kim English is ready to become a HC

Very minimal focus on offense, and recruiting continues to decline. Excellent character guy, but will rely on old/veteran teams such as this year to make any noise. Next year will be back to irrelevance.

He’s has like 15 seniors - that’s why they’re pretty good this season. They still should part ways with him and upgrade.

No. He’s rated appropriately.
He’s a very mediocre game day coach. Perhaps C- level.
He has no idea why he’s substituting the people he’s substituting. He just substitutes people of similar height and in no discernible fashion.
He hasn’t recruited well at Missouri which was his one salvation prior to this. Outside of his first year, when he hired the Porter’s dad to get both of them.
He runs off talented players. We had two three stars leave last year, the two best recruits in that class.
He overvalues “tough” players who lack any other skill.
He undervalues offense.
He’s too loyal to staff members.
In short, he is a great father to his players and a mediocre coach who will get you to the tourney once every three or four years.

IDK, I'm starting to think he's a one trick "just play hard defense pony" Of course he's a good character developer, hard to hate a coach like that"
But he said something this year about how he can't believe he ran the offense he ran last year, and he said it so flippantly it made me lose a little respect for him.
But I want to see how the class he recruited this year does(the one not on campus yet), and I don't mind giving him the 4 years he needs to see it through.
Having him in the coaching spot helps the team because it's slowly growing our reputation in the state, which suffered when we hired Kim Anderson, which was the stupidest hire in Missouri history.

He's solid but he isn't going to win any championships. He was a very good hire for Mizzou however He has stabilized their program and brought them back to respectability.

He is definitely underrated.

Absolutely crazy - Josh Richardson, Hubbs, Stokes, Maymon, McRae, Moore. Dude way underachieved at UT.

The game today proved that no he is not. He went conservative as frick with 5 1/2 minutes left and allowed a 22 point game turn into a 1 point game with less than 10 seconds left.

quote:Yep. Lost a lot of respect for him trying to play the race card on getting his arse run out of Knoxville instead of manning up and admitting he did a shitty job with a very solid Vols roster.

He was for about 35 minutes today!

He’s a C level coach. Maybe if he wins a couple tournament games he can find the runway out of Como and start the clock over again.
He leaves everywhere he goes much worse than he found it and Mizzou is in horrible shape for next year pending the decision of seniors.

Not really.
He’s a decent coach. That’s what he is.

I'm torn I go back and forth. He does underachieve, but I'm pretty sure that's because unlike other coaches he makes sure the kids take care of school and family before basketball.
If all the 1-2 year kids started going to the pros instead of college and the game became senior driven like it used to be he would probably be a top coach. Another way to put that is he would've been a top coach 20 years ago, anyone get what I'm saying here.
He's a good dude, I'd rather him coach my kid than anyone else.

he is not underrated. he is an average coach with a highly experienced roster this year.

I do agree - his character and how he ran the program were never in question. That said, I feel the same way about Barnes and am much happier with the results under his leadership.
