If they lose to 9-3 Virginia, they will have zero ranked wins, and their best wins will be over Texas A&M and Wake Forest.

I could see Virginia pulling it off. I have watched them play 3 times this year, once in person. Bryce Perkins is a really good player and they should have beat Notre Dame but they had like 5 turnovers.

They could lose by 3 TDs and still wouldn't be out. Next.

I believe it's likely that they drop out, but I can't really predict the minds of 13 random people that can do whatever they want and hide their process.

UGA have zero chance! So no point talking about being in the playoff!

They're definitely out. What possible justification would there be to keep them in?

They won’t have a top 25 win whether they win or lose the game.

The only team that is out if they lose is Georgia.

SHOULD they or WILL they?

Let's play devil's advocate.

Which of the following teams do you think would be undefeated with Clemson's schedule?

Oklahoma
Utah
Georgia - Oops
Florida
Penn State
Auburn
Alabama
Baylor
Wisconsin

Of those teams, which ones do you think would be likely to beat UVa on a neutral field?

I imagine the answer is either "most" or "all but Georgia" - and if UGA played USC at the end of the season, I think they likely don't get caught with their pants down.

Keep in mind that Auburn and Virginia, for example, have identical records, but Auburn's losses are to Florida, Georgia and LSU. Virginia's are to Notre Dame, Miami, and Louisville. That's why one 9-3 team is ranked #11, and the other that won their division is 23rd just to give Clemson a ranked opponent.

The toughest opponent Clemson has played is Texas A&M. As it stands, they are being rewarded for playing in the weakest P5 conference by a country mile. It's basically FSU from the 90s without having a good Miami and Florida consistently on the OOC schedule.

They'd end up ranked right near Bama.

The question, in a different wording, is simple. How the committee answers it is the issue.

Should a 12-1 Non-Conference champ (Clemson) be ranked above and placed in the playoffs over a 12-1 Conference Champ (Utah, Oklahoma or Baylor)?

The 12-1 Non Conference champ's performance from last year should have no bearing on their ranking for this year.

It's hard to imagine a team as talented as Clemson not looking INCREDIBLY incompetent at football in a game they lose to Virginia this year.

take that with no top25 wins, and no conference championship and I find it impossible to think the committee could claim they are "unequivocally" better than a 12-1 Utah, a 12-1 Oklahoma or a 12-1 Baylor. They would also lose the comparison to LSU and Ohio St if they somehow lost their championships also.

The ONLY way they could get in is if Utah loses and LSU win and Ohio St wins. Even then it would be a debate between 2 loss Georgia, 2 loss Oregon (champ) and Clemson.

If they lose to Virginia playing in that dogshit conference, then they shouldn't get anywhere near a playoff. It's a collection of losers, also-rans, wannabes and never-weres.
