Is Alabama too confident in their incoming transfers?

Looking at last year's team, here are the top 11 pass catchers. The one's in bold have left.

1. Jameson Williams- 1,572 yds (Draft)
2. John Metchie- 1,142 yds (Draft)

3. Cameron Latu- 410 yds (Returning, out for first few weeks)
4. Slade Bolden- 408 yds (Draft)
5. Brian Robinson- 296 yds (Draft)
6. Jahleel Billingsley- 256 yds (Transfer)

7. Treshon Holden- 239 yds (Returning)
8. JaCorey Brooks- 192 yds (Returning)
9. JoJo Earle- 148 yards (Returning)
10. Javon Baker- 101 yds (Transfer)
11. Agiye Hall- 72 yds (Transfer)

Who they have coming in:

Jermaine Burton (41 yds per game in 2021)
Tyler Harrell (43 yds per game in 2021)

Obviously I'm familiar with Burton and he will be fine. He does struggle with drops though. Harrell is crazy fast, but he put up somewhat pedestrian numbers in the ACC and it sounds like he hasn't been all that great in practice this year.

Burton, Harrell, Brooks, and Holden are solid enough players, but I doubt they even come close to replacing Williams and Metchie. I think this would be just fine for the old Bama teams but nowadays they need game-breaking WRs in their offense. I'm not so sure they have it.

If I'm looking at it objectively, I'd say that UGA, LSU, A&M, Tennessee, and maybe even SCjr have better WR/TE groups than Bama until we see more from their guys.

He wasn't used properly in Kirby's offense from 1987.

WR is a question mark for sure. Raw materials seem to be alright, but 1-2 guys who haven't produced and are young (Brooks, Earle, Leary, Anderson, Preston, Bond) are going to have to step up. I'd agree as of today we are probably 4th or 5th in the SEC WR wise. Burton was a big pick up just to add a consistent veteran outlet to a group of inexperienced guys. Harrell is kind of a wild card I think. He could be a big play threat or just kind of be a fast guy who never really breaks the rotation consistently. I think Brooks is going to be a very solid player, and there are game breaking talent level guys who are young but they have to step onto the field and do it.

A big positive is at RB, where we bring back Jase McClellan (10 catches, 97 yds, 3 TDs in 5 games) and add Jahmyr Gibbs (36 catches, 470 yards, 2 TDs). That was a position where we really didn't get much of anything from receiving wise after Jase got hurt, and now we get Jase back and add one of the best pass catching RBs in the country.

TE kind of is what it is. Latu is the receiving threat (he's solid, nothing spectacular), Ouzts the blocker and Niblack the wild card freshman.

Defense is elite again and they are due for some luck with injuries at RB. If the offensive line is at least average this is a championship Bama team.

Kirby's offense is the opposite of Bama's but to answer your question yes,
We had to have a running back so Gibbs was the best option but we were missing two things last year that absolutely killed us. A great back and a free safety.
But yes, we don't know about these guys in Crimson jerseys, we'll see.

Before last year Jameson Williams had 15 receptions for 166 yards over two years

In Metchie's freshman year he had 4 receptions for 23 yards

Point being that we really don't know how good Holden, Brooks and Earle can be yet. They could have just been young guys buried by more experienced players that will step up when given the opportunity or maybe they are not ready yet. You could have made the same arguments against Williams and Metchie that you are potentially using against those three above though.

Holden

I think we have a pretty good idea on Holden (same with Thaiu Jones-Bell). Kind of surprised they are still here, honestly, but glad they are. I'd be pretty shocked if either caught more than 10 balls the rest of their careers.

Brooks showed he is going to be a good player. He was very solid down the stretch last season.

Earle, Leary and the true freshmen this year (Anderson, Preston, Law, Bond) will be the ones that I think we all want to see this year and see what they look like. But that is why it was really nice to add Burton - because you'd prefer to not have an entire room of young, inexperienced guys.

While not a dedicated WR, I’d add Ga Tech transfer RB Jahmyr Gibbs to Bama’s passing game threat. He had 36 receptions for 470 yards and two TDs in 2021 for the Yellow Jackets, a 13.1 yard average per catch. Not huge numbers but he will have to be accounted for.

Jase and Jahmyr will both be really big parts of keeping the chains moving, IMHO. Jase was fantastic out in the flats last year until he got hurt.

Yeah I began this thread with the sole intention of trolling but as I looked at the numbers I decided that there was something to it and turned it into a serious thread.

The way y'all used Najee and BRob in 2019 and 2020 out of the backfield was terrifying.

I have no clue how good Gibbs will do. He had average YPC numbers at GT but that may just be because Tech sucks. I'm sure he will be great with the OL.

Yeah Latu doesn't really scare me. Not sure he really does anything most TEs can't do. Doesn't he also struggle with drops?

Alabama signed 4 of the 247 top 10 receivers in the 21 class and 3 of the top 12 in thw 22 class. That’s better than any of the teams you listed certainly including uga. And yes, Hall transferred after reading he was no longer on the roster. The 21 class were freshmen last year. So even without uga’s most productive receiver transferring in it will be good.

He certainly is the odd one out of those three but I don't see any reason that by the time Brooks and Earle are done at Bama, we don't group them with some of the better WRs in Saban's time

You are correct. I think Brooks is very much in the Burton/Metchie early mold (Metchie as a young player, at least). Not necessarily a game breaker type.

Harrell did some stuff at Louisville that was impressive and his speed is world class, but his overall production is a question mark - was it their offense, does he come and go, will he be better with a specific role with playmakers arouund him, etc. Who knows, really. Glad we grabbed him, though, because even the threat of that kind of burst with P5 experience is good to have on the 85 man roster.

Earle and Leary have similar skillsets. I was really excited about Leary last year but he was hurt off and on all year and never really got off the ground.

You never know how accurate PFF stuff is, but his broken tackle/yards after broken tackle numbers along with his "yards before getting hit" numbers were pretty nuts. I think at the very least he'll be Kenyan Drake and probably will be Josh Jacobs-esque. I'm probably overly excited about him but from the moment the rumblings of his transfer came up I was desperately hoping we got him.

Latu wasn't even a tight end until 3 years ago - he came here as a LB. He's still pretty raw at it and definitely has some random drops. He's a fine player, but you aren't gonna scheme your defense around stopping him or anything.

To be fair, this guy had an absolute bum throwing to him in the SEC Championship.

This year he will have a Heisman winner throwing him the ball.

Should see massively improved numbers.

He'll probably eclipse 1,000 yards simply due to being the #1 target in pass heavy offense, but once again I don't think he's all that. He has a habit of disappearing in big games.

vs Top 25 teams
21.8 ydsper game
0.15 TDs per game

vs Unranked teams
67.4 yds per game
0.67 TDs per game

Why does your Heisman winner always curl up into a fetal position?
