You have to give it to the AD and president, they definitely have some cojones.

Inside the battle over Auburn's coaching search

quote:

An influential group of Auburn boosters pushed hard for the school to fire Malzahn after eight seasons despite a hefty $21.4 million buyout. They believed Auburn should never have given Malzahn a seven-year, $49 million contract in 2017 and were beyond ready to see a new man leading the program. These powerful boosters quietly solicited support from Board of Trustees members, finally getting the necessary numbers after Auburn lost to Texas A&M on Dec. 5. With Malzahn on the way out, they wanted to quickly promote defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to the permanent position.

quote:

In his sixth year as Auburn’s defensive coordinator, Steele had culled support from those influential boosters over the years and boosted his stock in their eyes through his unit’s strong performance on the field. He “badly wanted the job,” according to a source, and would quickly accept an offer.

The plan was set: Fire Malzahn on Sunday and announce Steele as the next head coach within 48 hours.

quote:

Allen Greene, who was hired as Auburn’s AD in 2018, wasn’t on board with immediately promoting Steele. The former Notre Dame baseball player made clear he wanted a national search that evaluated candidates beyond those only residing in Lee County. The pro-Steele camp was undeterred, however, believing they carried more influence than Greene and would get the coach they wanted.

The Steele plan hit a snag when Auburn president Jay Gogue sided with Greene and created a search committee to evaluate all viable candidates and not only Steele, who was named the interim coach on Sunday.

quote:

There were search committee members initially open to the idea of Steele becoming the head coach, according to sources, but that openness waned after severe public backlash to the prospective hire. Fans launched a “Stop Steele” campaign and pummeled the Auburn administration and search committee members with emails, texts and tweets voicing their displeasure over Steele getting the job after reports he was a serious candidate.

The campaign worked, making it abundantly clear to the key people, including those that thought highly of Steele, that hiring him was no longer viable.

quote:

That didn’t stop powerful Auburn boosters from trying to intimidate Greene and search committee members into hiring Steele, sources told AL.com. The boosters made clear to Greene that if he bucked their wishes and his hire wasn’t successful, they’d make sure to run him out of Auburn. The intimidation plan backfired, though, as it made Gogue even more entrenched behind the need for a proper search.

That sounds like a plot in Game of Thrones. I have a feeling that Rane and company aren't going to easily forget what went down here.

If true, imagine being a BOT and wasting millions to pay the man you don’t want for another one, then getting stifled. Gus says thank you very much.

this new coach best produce early or Greene will be getting some heat. I applaud Green and Gousch. Similar to the money people at Bama 15 years ago when NS was hired and Mal Moore made the call.

Gouge already called bullshite on these goons. Greene locked on to Harsin early. Venables was given a legit shot at providing a plan, but after a few days decided to stay a DC. The talks with Napier never progressed because of Harsin. Those are the facts. Believe it or don't. However, this guy has no clue what he is writing.

ETA

AU never had interest in Clark. He reached out, we declined. Same with Sark.

The most perplexing rumor was UAB head coach Bill Clark turning down a job offer. Auburn officials and Clark had contact over the job, but they never formally interviewed the UAB coach, let alone offered him the job. “To say he pulled out or he was offered the job is just blatantly false,

Lots of stuff was rumors

Greene and Gouge will both be gone within 18 months. Boosters rule Auburn. Boosters pay the bills.

One caveat to this prediction: if Greene and Gouge get Tim Cook on their side, then you’ll see an open power struggle. Cook has long wanted to take Auburn in a politically liberal direction, and the boosters have been the brake on that. So, Game of Thrones indeed.

I have to admit after watching a few Harsin presser videos and such, the testosterone level on South Donahue Drive appears to have risen significantly in the past 24 hours.

Allen Greene is coming off looking like the young dynamic leader that we all hoped he would become. That's a ballsy hire and something that leaders do. War Damn Allen Greene

I think most of the grief is coming from the idea that Auburn fired Gus after a not-disastrous season, took a 20+ million dollar hit to do it, and had no solid plan for the next step.

He definitely went outside the box and outside the insular good ole Auburn Man template. Can a West Coast guy with no experience in the SEC become an “Auburn Man”? Remains to be seen. He’s not Saban but let’s see if he demands total control and gets it.

I’m more convinced things started rolling after we got spanked in Athens. I seriously doubt we waited until the A&M game to decide to fire Gus

If you don't think that there was a huge power struggle that went down during this coaching change, you are just burying your head in the sand.

Now has far as Clark goes, I tend to agree with most AU fans in that he was never offered. But initial discussions were had with him, but it never got to the offer stage.

But Rane and crew definitely plotted with Steele to oust Gus, and install Steele as HC. There is just too much smoke for their not to be a fire there. What benefit would it be for AU insiders/beat writers/website mods to make that stuff up? Luckily for y'all, your AD and president had some balls and basically kept them out of the search. They got you a HC that is outside of "the family", and someone whose not indebted to the boosters that ousted Gus and tried to install Steele.

But if Harsin is not successful within the first couple of years, and doesn't win over the majority of the fanbase, those same boosters will be waiting in the shadows. People with that much money, and who think they have power, don't take too kindly to being subverted by "outsiders".
