Baseball fields being different sizes makes next to zero sense to me
Let’s let everyone decide if their football field is anywhere between 98-102 yards long

Who cares? The championship isn’t played there and both teams get to hit in it.

TN plays on a tee ball field.

Why stop there, golf courses need to be uniformed as well.

Has there ever been an explanation as to why they're NOT universal in size?

I was honestly shocked when I saw the field. I hadn’t seen a game in Tenn in awhile until yesterday.

That's kind of the point in golf though. They change the pin location every day etc. And they all play on the same course each week.
Both teams use the same field when they play, so it's not the biggest issue in the world with baseball. It's not unfair or anything, but it does distort the shite out of stats and does give a big home field advantage.

Because it's baseball and the people in charge have some stupid Amish type view when it comes to the game.
Same fricks who still use human umpires to call balls and strikes inconsistently. Because nothing screams game purity more than human error.
But I don't watch it to start with, so doesn't really matter.

Both teams compete on the same field so what does it matter?

My guess is the ethos to keep baseball a lo-tech, lo-fuss sport with minimal regulations and to keep the game closely linked to its pastural origins. “Hey wanna play some baseball?” “Sure, where we gonna play?” “In the backyard. Let’s just call the back of my parents’ yard the outfield boundary.”

Yeah, but conversely, why do we make such a fuss about fields of play in almost every other sport being uniform? Every football field, in official play, is 100 yards long.

Because the games are different?

In what way that is significant to this discussion? A touchdown and an outside-the-park home run are both functions of the distance the ball goes. The ball has to cross a boundary set at a distance for the team to score. Except in football, the distance is specific. In baseball, the distance is arbitrary. Would we be okay with one team setting the field in their stadium to 70 yards?

This argument is absolutely nonsensical to me…

Fill me in on your thoughts.
For what it’s worth, it’s okay for baseball to have this peculiarity that sets it apart from other sports. It’s still peculiar though.

Yeah man that’s what I was getting at and sorta precludes the argument I think you were trying to make.
Maybe I’m wrong though…just seems that the only relevant thing to the sports we follow is that both teams play within a set of (mutually agreed upon) rules — everything else is just bullshite for us to argue about.
