If you have no head coach, should you be in the playoffs?

No matter what happens after this weekend, Notre Dame will have no real head coach and no real chance to compete in the playoffs. We can all agree that Notre Dame should not given a spot no matter what happens this weekend.

Yeah sure, coordinators do most of the work anyway

The team put together an 11-1 record.

If that is enough for a playoff spot, they should get one. Period.

I don't believe in punishing a team for their coach leaving. If they can pull together and compete, they should have the opportunity to prove it.

I think it’s kinda shitty to not allow a team that deserved to get there because their coach left.

That’s not to say I think ND will be in the playoffs but I think that by itself is a bad reason to keep them out.

Not sure that "deserved" has anything to do with it.

Without their head coach, are they one of the four best teams?

It will factor into the decision if it’s a close one.

What would Kelly do for them that he hasn't already instilled in the team during the regular season? Or the past 9?

If you're going to hold ND accountable for not having a 13th game by virtue of being independent and not in a conference championship is absolutely fair.

Punishing the team because of their HC taking another gig while the season is very much in play is horse shite.

It will, but it'll be bullshite. All the more reason to do away with this committee nonsense.

"Oh you won 11 games and looked pretty good doing it, that's good enough for a playoff spot!...oh, your coach just quit? Nevermind, we think you'll suck now so we aren't going to give you a chance to prove otherwise. Have fun in a meaningless bowl game."

This sport is broken.

Wrong. A&M and Notre Dame are the parts that are broken.

LSU fans would love it if somehow they pick a 2 loss Alabama in the playoffs over ND, based on the fact LSU plucked the coach that opens the door for Alabama.

Because I want a system where teams can earn their shot at a title by winning actual football games instead of by impressing some bullshite committee?

Ok.

A&M didn't exactly do that.

Why should we punish the players because their coach quit on them?

This discussion is about Notre Dame.

No, we cant agree at all.

The requirement is to win games, not to have a head coach.

Did the whole Notre Dame team just quit?

They take everything into account- injuries, player suspensions, everything. This will really hurt ND. They'll lose every tie-breaker imo.

Thinks for ND go get in- 2 of these 4 things would have to happen:
UM loses
Cincy loses
OSU cowboys lose
UGA destroys Bama

If after this weekend Notre Dame would go to the playoffs if Kelly was still the coach, then ND should also go to the playoffs without him. His coaching status should have zero bearing on that determination. The sport should be about the players and what they deserve.

If he turned up sick with Covid before the game, should they bring in a new team that has a head coach available? The answer is no. Same answer applies here.

I think there's a decent shot that two of these scenarios could happen. Will be interesting

By ‘deserved’ I meant of the 4 best or 4 perceived best - much like you’re saying. I’m not sure why you think penalizing a team because someone left is such a rad idea. If the police chief takes off a day does that mean the whole force doesn’t come in?
