If Vanderbilt job comes open - thoughts on hiring Jeff Monken from Army?

I've read his name loosely connected to that job two times now as the "possible coaching changes/coaches to watch for" lists start coming out. I've always thought that certain places that had no chance at recruiting anywhere near the level of the median and upper level teams in their leagues should consider doing things completely differently, and a genius option coach at Vanderbilt seems like the absolute perfect fit.

The cons of course would be selling it in terms of "entertainment" value to fans, but Vanderbilt doesn't draw well even when they are decently good and playing semi-fun ball, so is that even really a concern?

The NCAA is quietly banning all the techniques used to block for the option....Ran PJ out of the business and why service academy's are all that's left in In the BSD.

Yea but if I remember correctly Monken has kind of taken PJ's system and infused it with modern changes to technique as well as analytics.

Who knows, but it'd be intriguing.

I thought it would go better at Georgia Tech with better athletes than he got at the service academy's plus its just so damn hard to prepare for they always have that element to help them out. I doubt Vandy is going to hire an option coach but it wouldnt surprise me to see them try an air raid.

Johnson just never recruited or seemed to care at all about defense. That was his biggest issue over the 2nd half of his career.

Monken's team plays damn solid defense.

He's a hell of a coach. Any lower level P5 bottom feeder would do well to hire him.

Rutgers should do it. But if they don't, Vandy should.

Vandy should go all-in on either the option or a super pass heavy air raid attack.

This could very well be the way Vandy should go. You don’t have to have huge lineman or super athletes to run it . Even though some of the cut blocking is gone that offense is more about angles for blocking. They are hardly ever blown out because they can control the clock.

Drawback is if you get behind it’s very hard to come back. That and the fact that most people find it boring. If however you are winning most fans would be fine with the Norte Dame Box

I don't think Monken is interested coaching anywhere other than West Point. He seems to have a love and attachment to the institution. I know they all say that wherever they are, but he seems genuine when I've heard him asked about coaching elsewhere.

Defense is impossible to coach in an option system as everybody else runs spreads.

Yep - I think your best bet is almost to model yourself after the really good mid major basketball programs (and what he's done at Army).

Recruit smart, tough kids who will always be in the right place. It's a much better alternative to signing the athletic but not quite athletic enough for the big boys kid who won't develop and isn't great mentally.

Your only shot is to have 11 guys who play as a totally complete unit. And you hope your program is built so that when a senior leaves you have an experienced sophomore or junior ready to step in.

The option would be a disaster in the SEC, even more so than whatever the hell we're running now. The air raid attack here would likely do better than either the current system or the option.

That’s another drawback. You are not going to sign QB’s who throw it well in college so your scout may not be able to give the defense a good look

Vandy needs something to level the playing field somewhat. Double wing triple option or all out Air Raid throwing it 50-60 times a game. Both a drawbacks so it’s kind of whatever type players you can sign.

They would be lucky as hell to get him. Maybe he could turn Vandy into Georgia Tech with that triple option. I love watching that shite. Just doesn't win you any games against the big teams. Vandy hasn't done that anyways, so why not do it?

The guy who hired him at Army is now the President of the UofSC.

Vandy might give Caslen a call for a little inside info and leverage on Monken.

Army has taken a big step back this year, losing their DC to UNC really hurt them. That having been said, put Monken at a school like Vanderbilt where he has SEC money to draw on and he won't lose his coordinators to other jobs unless it is head coaching gigs.

Could the Monken style of play work at Vanderbilt? Well even though Army is down from past years I have little doubt his team could skull drag at least 4 teams from the SEC this season and make another 4-6 teams absolutely miserable.

Would Vanderbilt blow out Alabama with Monken? No, but it would be fun to watch Saban trying not to have a stroke while Vandy ran FB dive after FB dive.

Vandy could do a lot worse then hiring Jeff Monken.

Yea - I'm definitely not saying Vanderbilt needs to hire a triple option coach, but they definitely need to hire somebody who has a distinctive style and is good at what they do.

You can't hire a guy like Mason who runs pro-style offenses and is good at coaching defense. That just ain't gonna work at Vanderbilt for very long.

Monken looked good against the powerful WKU defense Saturday...

If Vandy hires a triple option coach, I will root for someone else.

Les Miles is the correct answer to Vandy's problems.
