If only one Mississippi school was in the SEC, what's the ceiling?

if one school dominated the states talent base year in year out, how good could they be in the conference/national?

One Mississippi school would be on the same level as Bama and LSU.

Definitely quite a bit higher... and with only one big school squatting on the top talent it would probably turn Southern Miss into a G5 powerhouse.

We know that when Ole Miss corralled most of the Mississippi top talent they were a legitimate national power. Could they compete with Bama and LSU? Probably, though I think both of those schools have the edge.

It would be another LSU. It wouldn't be on Bama's level but it would win the occasional national title

We should keep separate schools but combine football programs into one team.

Ole Miss supplies the QBs, Oline, WRs and skill players. State supplies the team with RBs and the Defense. Deal?

Then what would one Alabama school do?

Have too many men on the field against Minnesota in the Citrus Bowl.

With only one, it's lower. Iron has been sharpening iron.

I don’t know. UGA has a monopoly on Georgia and they can not win football or basketball titles

The state produced a grand total of 6 blue
chippers (all 4 stars BTW) in 2020

One top 100 and two top 200 players.
Good luck turning yourself into "Bama" with those numbers.

No it wouldn't.

Neither school can survive without out of state signees and a consolidated school couldn't either.

The state would be 100% locked down.
Guys like Raekwon Davis, Nakobe Dean, Cam Akers, Miles Brennan, etc. would stay in state. Mississippi produced Three 5 stars and Thirteen 4 stars in 2019. Throw in Memphis, Georgia, Florida, and Louisiana recruits and Mississippi would absolutely dominate nationally and compete for the SEC West most seasons.

You could make an argument:

The greatest RB in NFL history (Sweetness)
The greatest WR in NFL history (Rice)
and two top 10 QBs in NFL history (Favre, McNair)

were all from Mississippi and overlooked by State and Ole Miss. My fellow State fans will disagree with me, but there is no reason Ole Miss isn't a national power in football. They have the desire, fan/booster support and all that it takes - they just haven't had the great coach since Vaught. That's the missing link.

State has always had a loser mentality and just happy to be in the SEC. This is why State fan support for baseball (and lately womens basketball) is through the roof. We had a winner in the midst of a bunch of losers. Dan Mullen (along with Greg Byrne and Scott Stricklin) changed that mentality from lovable loser to interesting upstart.

But we will never be primed to be a national powerhouse like Ole Miss is.

Why did you have to go and kill the dream with the cowbells?

Any school would be successful "adding" those places in their recruiting base.

You had 4 blue chippers in '18 and 7 in '17. 2019 was an exceptional year but was an outlier.

NO state is ever "100% locked down"
Not Alabama,Texas, Florida, Georgia or Louisiana... don't be silly.

Bama has an instate SEC rival. So if they can do it with two SEC teams in state, why can't Ole Miss?

The team would have a good amount of national titles. Especially this past decade.
