I think a better question might be, who would a GM want to build a team around.

Newton by a wide margin

Lawrence then Burrow

However all would be gone in the first 12 picks

My overall point being that ~10 or so highly touted QBs have been drafted #1 this century yet none of them have yet accomplished the feat that the teams ultimately drafted them for.

Peyton won 2 this century and was the #1 pick, albeit drafted last century. Eli won 2 as the #1 pick. Roethlisberger won 2 and was in the same draft as Eli and the third QB taken that draft (the second was Rivers). Brady has won 7 by himself, obviously not the #1 pick but those guys account for 13 of the super bowl wins this century. Doesn’t really leave a lot of room for the rest of the #1s

Toss up between the other 2, but Burrow would be last obviously.

They weren't throwing nearly as much 15-20 years ago for Burrow to fit into their system lol

Probably Newton Lawrence Burrow

Teams put physical aspect first, but I wouosnt Bet against Joe having the best career.

Has Lawrence gotten better since his freshmen year?

Lawrence isn’t that good.

I agree. Completely built up on the performance in one game, hype and physical prowess. BTW, he’s 220 and not 240 lbs. He’s like Paul Bunyan’s blue ox; keeps getting bigger the closer we get to the draft. LOL.

Depends which GM.

Some prefer potential over actual production.

This.

Having the #1 pick usually means the whole team is bad. If you take a QB, that just means that piece is covered (hopefully), and you can build the other parts.

In this situation, you hope your QB will last long enough that you can build up your team; which means you don't want him running around taking big hits and shortening his career.

I know Brees wasn't a #1 pick, but look at his time with the Saints. The rest of the offense changed personnel 3-4 times, with multiple runs. Only got 1 Super Bowl, but easily could have played in 3 more over the course of more than a decade. They reloaded RBs, WRs, etc; Brees kept them viable.
That's what you want out of your QB- consistency, so you have time to reload a few times and make several runs.

For that reason only, I'd take Burrow first, Lawrence second, Cam third.
I think Cam gets you 1 good run before his body breaks down; Burrow and Lawrence seem more pass-friendly and less likely to get hurt. Burrow seems a bit more hungry than Lawrence.

This is easy

Lawrence
Burrow
Newton

Lawrence produced from day 1 at Clemson. Everyone saw what he could do as a true freshman when he had talented WRs running routes. Dominated one of the best Bama teams of all time.

Unfortunately for Lawrence, as his Soph and junior years came, Clemsons deficiencies in OL reared itself. Clemson has been average at best in this department and, unlike LSU/Burrow, Lawrence did not have an OC who was able to scheme an offense to hide these deficiencies.

To make matters worse, everyone on here remembers Lawrences performance against LSU - which was not good. But Clemson top two WRs - their only elite WRs two years ago - Higgins and Ross - were hurt. Last year, Lawrence
Played the entire season with Clemson 3 five star WRs playing a combined 100 snaps.

Burrows senior year when he played TL - he was 23. TL was 19. Burrow had NFL WRs all over the field. TLs junior season, he basically had no NFL WRs throwing to and an average OL. And an average OC.

Put TL on LSU 2019 or Bama 2020 and his numbers > Burrow and Jones. Wouldn’t be close.

Trevor Lawrence clearly had both for him to come in and basically start on a championship winning team day 1 as an 18 year old. Burrow didn’t start until 4 years into his college career and didn’t lead his team to a natty until was 23 years of age.

It’s really difficult to compare what Burrow did with other QBs coming out as juniors. One, Burrow was older than most kids in his grade. Either that, or he was held back when he was young. Two, he was redshirted. Three, he played all 4 years. Four, in his magical season, he wasn’t really even in school. Never went in person on LSUs campus. Compare him to someone like Deshaun Watson - by the time Burrow won is natty and had his year where he looked far superior to everyone else in college football, you have guys like Watson who are into their full 3rd season in the NFL.

By the time Lawrence entered the draft, he started for 3 years - going to championship game 2 times and semis once. At same point for Burrow, he was transferring to LSU where he was about to start his first season as a redshirt junior.

You really can’t compare the two.

What's the difference?

Physically, a 20 year old isn't much different than a 22 year old.

One could also say at this point that Lawrence has a lot more playing time than Burrow had which is vastly more important than a two year age difference.

Also, Lawrence was behind Kelly Bryant.

Burrow was behind JT Barrett and Dwayne Haskins. Major difference.
