How do they NOT fire Jimbo?
Posted on 11/11/22 at 8:11 am to linewar
I can think of 86 million reasons they cant

They make have his dump all assistants and hire everyone new except Jimblow.
They MIGHT be able to afford that.

Please stop this. You are giving A&M hope where there is none. No coaching change is going to make them better.

I'm genuinely asking the question, not trolling. Aggys feel free to offer thoughts.
If LSU fires Coach O 1.5 seasons removed from the greatest season in CFB history due to going .500, and Auburn fires Harsin in his second season...I'm genuinely curious if there is any scenario where aTm does NOT fire Jimbo after 4-8 coming off repeated 8&4 seasons.

They will have to rename to Texas 4&8 University.

I know they’re trash but look at it from this perspective.
LSU is coming into Kyle Field with a trip to ATL and possibly the CFP on the line. A&M has talent that is not utilized. They are not making a bowl. This is their last game and they can play spoiler to big brother LSU.
It’s a dangerous spot. It needs to be approached with caution. They suck yes but don’t underestimate a teams ability to get up for 1 game like this.

I truly can't see the money being the roadblock. $86M is a ton of cash, but there are ways to use arbitration (depending on the actual language in the contract - I'm sure the lawyers are all over that) to pay the buyout over a period of time. There's been a lot of trolling on how they don't have it, but they have it - or they can get it.
I just don't understand the sense of...resignation(?) that they cannot fire him. As an outsider, I don't see how they can afford to NOT fire him.

Is one potential reason that they do not have a target for a replacement?
Maybe this should be on the Coaching Changes board....

They are going to have to pay $86 mil to fire "Jimbo." Then they will have to pay $100 mil to hire the next guy, and not to mention the buyout at his current university. I realize saying "fire him!" is easy for somebody who is merely observing, but who is going to pay that, especially considering the lack of returns on the giant facility upgrades and the last recruiting class?

Because their motto is "next year"

Thanks - hadn't considered the investment in facilities.
Maybe I'm coming from left field, but to me it seems to be like throwing good money after bad - it's not like you have to come up with $186M on the Monday after you fire him. The buyout can be spread out and the contract to the new coach is not an upfront sum either. It's certainly not cheap, but what's the alternative? Accept a semi-lame duck coach for 2 more years to make the buyout more palatable, meanwhile your recruiting goes down the drain since every recruit and their parrain knows it's not a matter of if, but of when?
I am genuinely curious as to how this plays out.

Well, a really awful bloated contract for one

This right here ^^^^^
Few people consider what they would have to throw at the next coach, just based on the precedent they’ve set. AND….if you fire Jimbob, you obviously have to go after a huge name…..which will cost even more. Auburn is likely facing a similar situation, for obviously different reasons.

No doubt - Sexton gigged em lol. But I think if they want to do it, they can get the money to do it. Money is finite but they have some pretty deep coffers.
Consider: aTm to go 4-8 would lose to Cadillac Williams and a first-year head coach in Brian Kelly. In my mind, if they lose to Auburn this weekend, I don't think Jimbo flies home with the team.

Yes, but not all at once - unless I'm missing something where the entirety of the contract amount has to be put into escrow upon signing the contract?
Unless that's the case, it would appear to me that worst-case scenario they have to come up with $86M to pay off Jimbo and then $9 or $10M for a new coach's first year. That's a lot, but I would think it's doable.
