I mean, Malzahn was a pretty decent coach. He beat Saban more than any SEC coach has

Averaged 4 losses a year and only won two crappy bowl games.

I think the powers that be see the program regressing:

No one is catching Saban and Bama but they likely see Kirby rolling at UGA. They compete mostly in recruiting with Bama and UGA. Kirby hasn't got over the hump (its Georgia after all) but he pulls in Top 5 classes and wins his division. He generally has Georgia in the hunt every year. They probably see how Oregon got it done at LSU and you got Jimbo on the bubble this year and Mullen getting great traction at UF.

Gus isn't doing much of anything and let recruiting slip badly. They are paying too much for these results and decided to make a radical move or get left behind.

Exactly. Gus’s overall record was almost identical to Auburn’s historical average record of the past 100 years. But they have delusions of grandeur, so...

How many of those other coaches did Saban face inside JHS?

To be clear, I was one of the very first on the Gus Bus and one of the last off. He did some very good things for us, and for that, I'll always be a fan. He had an innovative approach, but in retrospect, I'm not sure that makes him an innovator as he seemed unable to evolve as others caught up.

It was time for a change. Appreciate Gus for putting a couple elite teams together but he also let a couple elite teams slide into 7-5. He basically did no better or worse than any other AU coach outside of Dye but he did have to do it against LSU, UGA and historically great Bama dynasty. AU is without a doubt the hardest job (out of schools that have a chance to really win) out there right now. He is a great guy and built a solid culture and by all accounts ran a clean program. Just wish AU had the guts to give a coach full control.

The biggest red flag imo

Was an above average coach for an average program. Until the people with money down there realize they dont know football, auburn will continue to be an average job. A stepping stool for up and comers.

Gus was never going to work out at this point, but I’m not sure it’s on him. A coach has to be able to experiment, fail, and learn and Gus was not allowed to do that for half of his tenure at the Barn.

He rode out these last few years to get a buyout. Hope he gets full control at another P5 in a few years.

You never fire a winning coach without his replacement lined up. Rule #1.

This is the only part of me that kinda regrets it.

You’re right. Gus was better than this shitshow and what we might end up with.

But his random years of success could never make up for the persistent suckage. Don’t forget that even his good years started out horribly. We were blown out by LSU in 2013 and 2017 was pretty much a wash until we got to the end of the season.

This is pretty much correct. The profession at the SEC level puts tremendous pressure on programs/coaches whose programs have been successful in the last 5-10 years.
