I am 61 years old. I have spent my adult live working with disadvantaged youth. I currently teach middle school math to incarcerated children, 12 to 15 years old. What Alabama is doing is horrible. My colleagues and I strive to teach our students that consequences flow from actions. Our students are watching this. They are learning from this. They see that thug behavior is rewarded if you are athletic enough. The University of Alabama is actively countering my life work. Shame. Shame.

Well said Oldfatdog. And most Bama fans would claim to be strongly opposed to that type of behavior, but they throw away their morals when it benefits their basketball team. Makes you wonder what a star football player could get away with in Tuscaloosa...

Alabama is doing the right thing. Brandon Miller did nothing wrong. Darius Miller did nothing wrong and should not be charged with anything let alone murder. The only person that took action to hurt anyone was the scum that pulled the trigger.

Maybe a more valuable lesson that you could teach to your youth is that hanging out with scum will sully your good reputation sooner or later, and if you respect and cooperate with police officers - the results will be better than if they had not.

Brandon Miller is a great example of both.

Thank you. I imagine this is a tough job and I appreciate you doing it (especially with passion).

I would argue those who are at fault are being punished. I think a lot of the “blame” being associated with Miller is 20/20 hindsight.

I’m also fairly hesitant to expect a very young person to have the same judgment/foresight as me. I’m probably more likely to look to intentions in these type situations (which I assume is what the police/DA did in this situation).

Hate to agree with you, but this is spot on. So many kids get in trouble because they are around it 24-7. I’ve stated that I think Miller is innocent regarding the law, but certainly not when it comes to upholding a reputation you’d want your program to have.

The hand wringing and virtue signaling on this board has gotten out of fricking control. These kids aren't going to be influenced by this shite. Of all the crazy as shite that happens in our country every single day that people get away with(and Miller didn't really get away with anything), this is going to tip the scale for them? Give me a break.

Wut? Immature freshman will be influenced at some point. If we are talking “on court”, that’s a prime reason why we have seen more upsets of top seeds in the past years. Youth can get rattled.

What are you even trying to say?

I’m with them every day. Truthfully, two weeks ago, I had never heard Miller’s name. Now, students are talking about him daily, wanting to emulate him. You can speculate all you want. I see what is in front of me. I’m done with this conversation now. I’ll keep on keeping on with the children that I’m blessed to serve.
