Brett Favre probably had something to do with it.

Nope, actually he didn't

Try ULL or an actual decent one out.
LSU plays a different in-state school every year. They're playing, gasp, two of them in 2021. They've played ULL 22 times. ULL has scored 1 TD in those 22 games, way back in 1924

So, why would they do that?
Less travel $ to pay out.
Better opponent fan attendance.
More concession $.
You could probably even charge SEC game prices for the tickets and it wouldn't change home team attendance (if against an in-state P5 school).
I don't think anyone is saying UAT should do a home and home w/UAB or Jacksonville State, but there is nothing wrong at all with an OOC match up with those teams.

We have had the on field for a while. several games were vacated because a store gave all students a discount for shopping there.

This is a reasonable post but I’m just not convinced these benefits (which seem rather minimal in the big picture) justify a flagship acting to raise the stature of a smaller in-state school which competes for many of the same resources (athletes, press, funding, etc).

Athletes? Please tell me the last recruit Saban lost to Jax St, UAB, Troy, AAMU, etc...
Press??? El Oh EL. Please...
Funding? Not sure if Srs. Carl from Clanton has a few hundred dollars to take the fam to a football game. Does he go to:
a) Tuscaloosa to watch Alabama play NMSU
b) Troy to watch the Trojans play USM
c) Birmingham to watch the Blazers play Akron
ETA- If the flagship was struggling or in a down period, I might buy your argument. Right now it makes sense for Ole Miss to not play USM or Tennessee to not play Memphis (although they are playing UTC this wkend). But right now those excuses do not fly for Alabama.
ETA2- SWAC schools travel well. Jackson State football games are a blast for tailgating (even as a white guy). AAMU or ASU would be fantastic in-state cupcakes.

I knew this was going to be said. Your view is too myopic. Does Miami compete with FSU for recruits? Obviously yes. But for years Florida State was a second rate program who had to travel to Miami every year. Just take that point conceptually, I’m not interested in litigating all the obvious differences in those programs.
Funding
Again, you’re being shortsighted. At the end of the day most of the SEC states are very poor and competing for the same resources. Alabama and Auburn benefit from being the only top tier names in town. First of all, some of the schools Alabama could play are within their system so they are hypothetically competing for some of the digressionary funds. Also, like you said, Alabama has Saban now but could have a Dubose era program 5 years from now when the UAB game we signed today comes up on the schedule. Maybe Joe Yankee Sidewalker Blow, a successful attorney in Birmingham, gives his $1M gift to UAB who started winning big. He’s been taking his family to those games instead of dealing with 5 hours of traffic.
Look, I never said a few games here and there are going to usher in the fundamental shifts above, but I have yet to see a compelling argument on why Alabama would benefit from playing UAB, or Florida playing UCF, etc, especially when weighed against the hypothetical negatives. If you can’t recognize that the current landscape isn’t static for eternity I don’t know what to tell you.

I’m feeling magnanimous so I’ll admit it would absolutely be kind of fun (and cool for the state) for Bama to play ASU or Tuskegee (certainly better than NM State). But AD’s typically don’t make decisions based strictly on that kind of rationale.

Are you seriously comparing Alabama to Florida? Dude...
Population difference alone should be your first clue.

You really are Captain Obvious. Are you seriously saying that the status quo today will necessarily remain the status quo tomorrow?

Alabama paid NMSU $3.8 million for three games ($1.27M/game).
Don't tell me AAMU or ASU wouldn't play for half that amount.
That's ~$600K/game that can be put towards non-revenue sports, and that is just off of the payout to the visiting team. That isn't factoring in additional ticket revenue or concessions.

Agree, that's insane. And for a super lame game with no interest.

I think you're probably about right.
Still, I think for the existential reasons I already referenced, I think it's a practical policy to not play in-state lower tier programs. I'm not saying I support the policy, or that I'm happy about it. I'm saying the policy makes sense from a long term perspective.

If you're asking me to predict the future, then no.
Do I think the state of Alabama will be able to support 3 P5 athletic departments within the next 20 years? That's going to be a no from me, dawg. UAB* is CUSA and USA with Troy are Sun Belt. I don't see any of them making the leap from their current levels to P5 in the next 20 years.
*The UA System will never allow UAB to do so.

Y'all should stick to playing in state schools #FailState

According to wiki USM has had 78 consensus All Americans, that's more than Bama lol. USM has also beaten Bama, Auburn, and FSU several times going back 40 years. Not to mention State and Ole Miss.
