How would you structure a 16 team playoff?

I think that is where we need to go, but you would have to carefully craft it so there are as few re-matches as possible. Here is the way it would go down with the current rankings. I think you need to shuffle Bama, Auburn and Oregon and also put at least one SEC team on the bottom part of the bracket.
1. LSU
16. Iowa
8. Wisconsin
9. Florida
5. Georgia
12. Auburn
4. Oklahoma
13. Alabama
6. Oregon
11. Utah
3. Clemson
14. Michigan
7. Baylor
10. Penn State
2. Ohio State
15. Notre Dame
1. LSU
16. Iowa
8. Wisconsin
9. Florida
5. Georgia
12. Auburn
4. Oklahoma
13. Alabama
6. Oregon
11. Utah
3. Clemson
14. Michigan
7. Baylor
10. Penn State
2. Ohio State
15. Notre Dame

every team in a conference. 12 champs. 4 at large bids. that way, there's TWO ways to make the playoffs. just like every other ncaa sport

Like this:
1 vs 4
2 vs 3
Tell the rest to go frick themselves.

I would structure it in the trashcan where the idea belongs.

I would not. No one on that list below #4 (#3 really) "deserves" a shot.
I see no reason to expand the playoffs at all

5th place in the SEC makes the playoffs

This year; agreed.

In general, disagree. I think a 6-team playoff would be a great idea. With the #1 & #2 seeds getting a bye while #3 plays #6 & #4 plays #5.

Playoffs started at the 1st game of the season. Top 4 is fine like it is.

12-team playoff.
-Reduce regular season to 11 games
-Power 5 conference champions
-Top Group of 5 champion
-6 at large bids
-Cannot be selected as an at-large with more than 2 losses
-Top 4 seeds get byes
-Remaining 8 teams play the first round at the home of seeds 5-8
-New Years Six bowls populate the remaining 7 games
Here's how it would play out hypothetically this season.
SEC Champion: LSU
ACC Champion: Clemson
Big Ten Champion: Ohio State
PAC 12 Champion: Oregon
Big 12 Champion: Oklahoma
Group of 5 Champion: Memphis
At-Large: Georgia, Utah, Baylor, Florida, Penn State, Alabama
Byes: 1-LSU, 2-Clemson, 3-Ohio State, 4-Oklahoma
Hosts: 5-Georgia, 6-Oregon, 7-Memphis, 8-Baylor
1st Round: 12-Alabama at 5-Oregon
1st Round: 11-Florida at 6-Memphis
1st Round: 10-Penn State at 7-Georgia
1st Round: 9-Utah at 8-Baylor
Sugar: 9-Utah/8-Baylor vs. 1-LSU
Rose: 12-Alabama/5-Oregon vs. 4-Oklahoma
Cotton: 11-Florida/6-Memphis vs. 3-Ohio State
Orange: 10-Penn State/7-Georgia vs. 2-Clemson
Peach: Semifinal 1
Fiesta: Semifinal 2

Only problem with comparing it to the other tournaments:
All other NCAA tournaments have just as many at-large bids as automatic bids. If you want to mimic those, you'd have about 20 teams (10 conf champs and 10 at-large bids).

if you like the 16 team playoff you probably also like all the bowl games

There are only two things “added” by a 16 team playoff imo.
1) Revenue for schools and networks in a shameless money grab with no competitive purpose, and ...
2) Additional exposure to injury for players on teams seeded 9-16 with zero compensation or realistic shot at a championship.

true. but, i would just like to have a second chance to make the playoffs so that your season isn't DONE when you lose game 1 to an inferior opponent or even a FCS school.

Hence a 12-team playoff. 6 Conference Champions (5 Power 5, 1 Group of 5) plus 6 at-large bids.

I wouldn't. Instead, I would divide all of the P5 schools up into 8 conferences based on region and divide all of the G5 schools up into 8 conferences also based on region.
Then I would have all the 8 conference champions from the P5 division play a tournament to determine the national champs, and I would also have all the 8 conference champions from the G5 division play a tournament to determine their national champs.
The beauty of such a system is no bullshite CFP committee or computers. As the national champions would be true actual national champions.

Too many conferences. There are only 10 conferences now.

Who cares about how many conferences there are? The object is to take the biased human beings and the computers completely out of the equation so that only true national champions emerge.
That was always the biggest problem, biased playoff committees or biased computer programs.
