I mean, damn.

Seems like this is an annual painfully awkward occurrence.

Every year since Fulmer, Gruden was going to be the coach.

Every year UT fans chirp and cheer about the impending reality of Gruden being their coach.

And then he turns them down, and we are all too busy cringing to make fun of them

It's like LSU fans with beating Bama.

Well they are use to getting turned by their cousins at family reunions but eventually they come around. Vols are playing the long con to get their man

I don’t understand some of our fans infatuation with him. Unfortunately they are some of the most vocal/ give UT fans the reputation we have.

I want Mullen- we’ll end up with Norvell

Cutcliffe would be a solid get, could give you 5-10 years

And there’s really no evidence that he’s that great of a HC. Sure he won a SB with Dungy’s players, but against a team that he put together. And then he proceeded to regress with Tampa Bay yearly after the title.

Without the Chuckie persona, he’s pretty much a nondescript former HC.

I agree- I think he’d do well at UT. My two main concerns would be

1. Our idiot fans’ reaction
2. His age

It blows me away that people try to use this argument. Gruden built a super bowl team and then won a Super Bowl with another. He won his division 5 out of his 11 years with two different organizations.

People also forget what Tampa gave up to get him, their 2002 and 2003 first round picks and their 2002 and 2004 second round picks. That didn't exactly set him up for success later in his tenure. Look at the Raiders in the years before he got there and then after he left. Tells you all you need to know.

I guess I just wish this board wasn't filled with drooling retards.

I just hope it becomes final. He says he "consulted his family, thought about it heavily, put it in Gods hands, and decided it will not be something he will want to do now or ever".

He likes the attention as he hangs around the VOLs program. Which at this point I think all have realized that UT is his top College program, and if he were to go in the CFB coaching ranks it would be at UT.

I just want the final close to it. Especially from Currie as this is the second AD that has allowed the Grumers to build up to assist push out the HC they inherited. Leaving wins on the table cause of it. I wanted Jones out as I didn't think he could take UT where we needed to, but we should be bowl eligible. I also strongly believe the Grumors cost Dooley at min 1 win his final year.

BTW - I'm not excited about, or want Gruden, and won't be until I hear about the coordinators he will bring in. He will be a CEO coach like Fulmer, but needs his Cutcliffe/Chavis combo to get it done.

Sid...I never agree with you, but you’re spot on here.
Also, I don’t see him ever coaching again.
I’m sure he loves the publicity of being considered for HC jobs every year.

I think that's all Hart ever did with it. He never tried to hire him and tbh he made that clear from the start and so did Gruden and his agent.

Would love Gruden in the SEC. But even he says that he would have a college team on probation because he doesn't understand all of the rules.

I agree. hart wanted to bring his own guy in, and we got jones. Yay!

I think this time around gruden is looking at it seriously, so want it closed out. Tired of having him being a cloud over the program.

Bingo. He really developed one quarterback in all of his years in the NFL, and that was Rich Gannon. I'll give him credit on Gannon, even though Gannon was a veteran at that point. But Gannon did have his best years in Oakland.

When he got to Tampa, he rode that defense. Once the defense and Brad Johnson got old, it was curtains. They made the playoffs twice in his last six years in Tampa, and never developed another quarterback to succeed Johnson.

And I don't understand why anyone (including the idiot faction of the LSU fan base last year) would want someone who hasn't coached in college in more than 25 years to be their head coach.

You speak reasonably. Are you sure you are on the right board? Most of the other UT fans don't understand how this works.

the Gruden thing has gotten past the stupid point and make the UTk fans look worse every time it happens. Just take whoever will go there and be happy

Yeah, that'll happen and you'd go through the fricking roof if someone said that about your school. Pretty much everyone on here would.
