How many SEC basketball coaches are on the Hot Seat?

Right now I think:
Definitely Fired:
Tom Crean
Potentially fired:
Mike White
Frank Martin
Kermit Davis
Cuonzo Martin
Probably safe but not impossible to be fired:
Ben Howland
Jerry Stackhouse
Everybody else is safe unless a Scandal happens.

I think Barnes will be on forced retirement watch entering next year if he doesn’t make the second weekend.

Doubtful. He's done a damn good job.

Martin is gone unless he somehow goes .500 in conference.

He has been okay but if they flame out early in the tournament he will feel some real heat, especially if they lose in the first round.
He is the fifth highest paid coach in the sport and will be going on four years without even a Sweet 16 if they don’t do it this year.
He’s already skating on thin ice with many fans due to the UCLA thing. If he doesn’t do something substantial soon he will feel it.

Tennessee was more dangerous as a play in 11 seed than when they’re highly seeded

What do you attribute to his overall lack of success in the tournament especially in context of the good seeding he gets his teams to many times?

Teams peak too early oftentimes imo.
2017-18 Tennessee was a 3 seed and the only time in his tenure his team was playing their best basketball or close to it going in to March. Lost in a very close game in SECT championship game after winning regular season championship. Hammered Wright State in the first round. Then Alexander got hurt and missed the Loyola game. Really impacted Tennessee defensively. Tennessee still should have beat Loyola but Custer hit a miracle shot to win by 1. That year the bracket was wide open to get to the Final Four and Tennessee was really playing well.
The next year Tennessee was even better but they definitely peaked too early. 27-4 regular season but they were playing much better in January than March. Had to grind through a very tough February schedule and lost several close games that kind of took their mojo away. Ended up with a 2 seed and kind of plodded their way through the first weekend. Then didn’t show up in the first half in the Purdue game in the Sweet 16 which was a pick em type game between two very good teams. Tennessee came back to lead late but fouled and had to go to OT where they ran out of gas.
Last year’s team was just putrid offensively and ran into a very hot Oregon State team.
Tournament is a bizarre deal and every year is different and so dependent on stuff outside of your control but I think Barnes’ main issue is that it’s very rare for his teams to peak in March.

Kermit probably isn’t this year. Per usual he’s one or two guards away from having a complete team. The roster has gotten better and they are still playing hard for him which makes me think they will give him at least one more year. It’s not like we have a list of awesome coaches lining up to take our job. If the team quits on him all bets are off though. His best chance to survive is to rebuild his assistant staff and find some people that know how to run real offensive sets and score some points.

Bruce Pearl is on the hot seat. Not that Auburn will fire him but every big program with an opening is going to make him an offer.

That's pretty much the norm for Barnes.
Of his 25 NCAA Tournament appearances, he's made it out of the opening weekend 7 times.

Yeah. He is not going to be fired per se, but he’s almost 70 and is among the highest paid coaches in America. He’s done a nice job stabilizing things but if he doesn’t produce in March at all I don’t see him hanging around much longer.

They weren’t even headed for the NIT going into the PAC 12 tourney. It’s one thing for a good mid major to make a run (Loyola, George Mason, etc) but one like Oregon State probably was one of the craziest ever.
Now they’re 3-14 currently.

quote:Tennessee has 8 Sweet 16s ever. What on Earth makes you think you have any rationale to get fired up about Barnes when he got you one of them? The fact, if he is in fact the 5th highest paid coach, that you apparently massively overpaid for him based on his stints at Clemson and Texas.
He is the fifth highest paid coach in the sport and will be going on four years without even a Sweet 16 if they don’t do it this year.
You're Tennessee basketball. JFC get some perspective.

Tennessee made 5 Sweet 16s under three different coaches from 2000-2014. Barnes has one in 7 years.
You can think whatever you want, but another early March exit and he’s not going to have a lot of support considering his salary and the UCLA stunt. Many fans are already souring on him.
Tennessee fired Jerry Green after 4 years of making the NCAA Tourney every single year with a Sweet 16 and SEC title mixed in.
Barnes hasn’t done anywhere near that. Acting like he is untouchable because he made one sweet 16 is pretty amusing though.
