I suppose the easy answer is three years.

The first year is always a freebee, even with high expectations, the excuses are just too easy to muster with any new coach.

The second year is when the fanbase expects to see improvement over the first year, which is almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy because the first year is usually pretty bad for most new coaches.

The third year is when the fanbase expects the new coach's own freshmen, sophs, juniors, and hand-picked senior transfers to really shine, blowing out the little sisters of the poor, beating your rivals, and having the opportunity to finish the season on a large stage, typically a conference championship game, even if you don't win it.

The fourth year, new coach finally has all of his players in place, plenty of asst coach hires/fires to finally put together the dream team. This is the team that's going to finally win it all. Even if you don't win it all, you absolutely have to compete at the highest level, at least get to the NC game.

And from the 5th year forward, you are expected to compete for championships year after year, winning one every once in a while.

So, back to Mullen.

Does he follow this storyline? Does he traject perfectly into this timeline? Or does he stumble along the way? And if he does stumble, how patient will the UF fanbase be with him?

If the year three expectation isn't met, and year three is just a lackluster repeat of an 8-win year two record, is he gone?

4 at absolute minimum. I don't see how you can judge a guy, especially needing an almost complete overhaul like mullen, without letting him get a full recruiting cycle under his belt.

UF also needs to be patient to not undo any good that will start to be done. You can't just cycle through a coach every 3-4 years or you'll start potentially doing long term damage.

They need to be patient but also need to turn the heat up after year two if everything isn't on track. Mullen has potential to do big things at Florida, but he's going to have to separate himself from the country club buddies to ever reach the full potential. Best thing that could happen would be to struggle enough the first couple of years to force him to move away from those guys.

Nobody knows how well he will do, but he will get at least four years to show he can compete for championships, i’m sure by then we will know what kind of coach we have in Gainesville. If he’s tredding water we will move on if he’s winning he will be one of the top 5 paid coaches in football. Everything else is just a guess.

Mullen walked into a pretty good situation with how poorly the previous coaches performed. Simply putting out a good offensive product will appease a lot of the fan base in the short term.

Not sure what is funny, taking over after two disastrous hires is certainly easier from an expectations standpoint than following someone like Meyer or Spurrier. The bar is lower on the front end.

Dude is like a moth to a flame when it comes to anything UF on here. He admitted he's still mad about the 09 game.

Walking into a good situation? You just fired a coach who won the East 2 times. Sorry, but Mullen is not as proven as McElwain and look how that went.

Umm wasnt your argument that there was plenty of stuff there for Mullen? Wouldnt that blow up your argument being removed so many years from Meyer or Spurrier?

Where did I say any of that? I said the last two coaches were bad, and thus the fans will be happier with less in the short term. Putting a good offense on the field would be enough to win over fans early on.

Mac was more proven than Mullen? How does one come to that conclusion?

Watch year 2 for Mullen. Look at every school he has ever been - year 2 is always a big jump from year 1.

To answer your question, he will get 3 years at least.

But you'll know whether he will be a flop after year 2. If Florida doesn't win at least 9, preferably 10, games in 2019, he's a dud.

I expect he will be there until he goes to the Patriots. He will compete for a title at Florida. I expect in 4-5 years he’ll be in the NFL.

McElwain is more proven than Mullen?
Why is it when we won the east twice everyone on this board said we backed in with Muschamps recruits, but now that he’s fired it was all McElwain? GTFOH Mullen is one of the youngest head coaches we have ever hired and he already has 9 years of HC experience in the SEC and 2 national titles as an OC. Please inform us all how Jim “Shark Humper” McElwain is more proven? 3 years at CSU and winning 1 title with Saban? Seems ridiculous to make that statement to me.

There's a good chance we win 10 games in 2018. Our schedule is slaw the next 2 years.
