to 8 team playoffs? I think it happens after this season. Revenue’s too enticing and it would be great for the sport on a national level.

4 teams is a good balance between revenue and wellbeing of the student athletes. I have a hard time seeing it expanded to 8.

4 is weird though because outside of Bama and clemson these past couple of years I feel like there is no gap between like 4 and 5

Something really fricky will have to happen to expand it to 8.

Like leaving Bama out fricky.

Current CFP contract is until 2025 so it's unlikely anything changes before then.

I think there is some interest in doing that.

The FCS started with just 4 teams. Then they went to 8. Then they went to 12 teams with the top 4 getting a bid.

It would, however, absolutely eat the bowl system alive. Those 6-6 Terlet Bowl match ups would vanish as the mid tier bowls get the first round games. Which might not be a bad thing. 8-5 Terlet Bowl match ups is something I'm more likely to watch.

I have a feeling expanding the playoff will coincide with a passing of some sort of player compensation.

They have to expand because no 1 cares about the bowls anymore.

While an expanded playoff sounds nice, when you try to put it together logistically, there are a lot of downsides. Maybe it will happen someday, but I expect the current contract for the 4 team format to be completed.

I think I read somewhere that at the Board of Mangers, not the selection committee, meeting in January that expansion wasn’t even discussed. With that said I’m sure they have met since then and I think expansion will happen but not before 2025.

When the semifinals become consistently decent, then they should talk expansion. When they are only good at around a 20-25% clip, there is no reason to add four more games.

The sponsorship money from the current setup is probably enough to halt immediate expansion but even that will dry up soon. Every school in the playoff hunt feels unsatisfied and the rest are blah because all of the hype.

I'm not saying they would or should, but you could eliminate Conf. championship games or somehow work them into the playoff.

I still think it'd result in a couple extra games though.

Not sure, I put zero critical thinking into this post, as usual.

I could see it, but I think they would have to back the regular season to the pre-2006 11 games, or the clamoring for player compensation will really be off the wall. The symbolism of college football teams playing 16 games in a season will become the new rhetoric used by those who are advocating for it.

Whenever there are three one loss SEC teams, and everybody knows all three should be in the playoffs, they’ll get serious about expanding to 8.

I can see this being the deciding factor imo.

Until we have more competitive semi-final games why would they expand?

It will happen but won’t be for a few years.

I’m sure it will happen. I think players leaving early for NFL and the new transfer rules will drastically speed it up. Cause/effect players outside of the playoffs don’t give a rip about playing in a useless bowl. I think you’ll see more and more sit it out/phone it in. Bowls not in the big dance will suffer.
