I was considering jumping on a plane and heading to cockville since flights are so cheap right now. However, after reading some reviews on the trip I am second-guessing.

Here is what some fellow Aggies had to say:

quote:

Stay in Charleston if you are there longer than just for the game. So much more to see and do.

quote:

I'd say out of all the SEC venues I've visited, it's the least liked one for me and my wife. Didn't find the Cock fans very friendly, un willing to discuss football, their team or just the area that they are from. The stadium is in the state fair grounds and not on campus, and getting out of the area was down right miserable. Got back to the Hilton close to the campus and the valet refused to park our vehicle because we had ATM gear on, complained to the manager and got the same response. Contacted Hilton and got two free nights out of the ordeal.

Charleston is the best part of the trip. We also did Asheville, but it makes Austin look like a bastion of conservative think. They do have some awesome breweries.

quote:

Lots and lots of golf.

Anything else and you might as well not go.

quote:

I've been twice, 2013 and 2017 I believe. It's kinda meh.....the people are rude and the town isn't much. Found a couple decent spots but can't remember the name. The stadium is cool, but it's off-campus. The "cock sounds" on 3rd downs will wear you out. I had multiple girls walk up to me and my wife and say "Eff you, go back to Texas!!", probably happened like 5 times, very odd. I was literally just walking to the game holding my wife's hand wearing A&M gear, nothing more.

quote:

The are the Arkansas fans of the East. Get in and get out as fast as possible. Columbia is an absolute armpit.

quote:

Columbia is a shlt hole. Shltty fans, shltty businesses (On gameday, I was refused service at a BBQ joint because I had A&M gear on), and egress out of the stadium after the game is the worst I've ever seen. Be prepared to just tailgate for two hours after the game, because you'll just be sitting in your car if you don't.

Worst venue in the SEC, hands down.

quote:

This was our experience as well. Probably won't make a return trip to USCe for a while unless we make a golfing weekend out of it while over there.

quote:

Charleston - my favorite city. History, Culture, Food, Coast, Architecture.

Wife and I were really unimpressed with Columbia when driving through. We stopped and drove around for a bit, went by stadium, etc. People unfriendly. Just 1 experience tho!

quote:

Exactly. Cocks were a$zholes

quote:

Columbia is a dump. Try not to get mugged!

Basically, everyone that commented likes South Carolina (Charleston, Hilton Head, Kiawa Island, Greenville), but hated Columbia. This can't be true, can it? Is it really that bad?

These cities are all better than Columbia yes. Definitely no arguments there. Columbia isn't terrible though, there's plenty to do there.

You really do want to squeeze as much out of this 'rivalry' as humanly possible, don't you? It's pathetic. Congrats on annually dominating a shitty team and avoiding Daddy Texas.

Columbia sorta has a zoo. When I worked in Augusta I did trade shows at the fair grounds and we would hit palmetto state armory and fudruckers

Honestly, fly into Charleston and stay there. It’s not a bad ride to Columbia.

Yeah and we don't run like bitches from them. Only COVID could stop us, and it did.

Sort of? It’s actually been ranked a top 10 zoo in the entire country in years past.

They have gotten rid of some great animals over the last 20 years though - polar bear, hippos, hyenas.

But they do have koalas and Komodo dragons.

ETA: and as someone already mentioned - Yes, the coast is a much better place to visit or vacation than Columbia. I don't think anyone would tell you different. Columbia just isn't a tourist destination.

But it's fine. The bars and restaurants are fine and surprisingly diverse given the small size of the city.

The stadium is off-campus but I kind of like that - it leaves a shite ton of room for parking and tailgating and it keeps away fans off the campus. The stadium itself is nice enough and has undergone plenty of renovations so it's not like you'll be sitting in a dump.

I live in Monroe, LA and my GF lives in Columbia so I drive there a couple times a month. I mean it’s better than Monroe but yes I’d advise staying in Charleston. Not a bad drive to Columbia from there. Lots of golf too!

That's the new city motto.

Columbia has nice museums. There’s a nice river walk and the zoo is good (particularly if they have the Christmas lights up). Five Points is the bar area but cops are harassing people there lately so be careful. Columbia is better than Hattiesburg, Gainesville, and Auburn but that’s about it.

I'm from South Carolina. I love Columbia. I guess if you're not familiar with the area then you don't know where to go in town but there are definitely quality things to do and see.

Of course the coast is better, tho. I mean Charleston in particular is gorgeous and loaded with history and things to do and see.

Five Points? Are you 25 and under? If not why the frick would you even want to go there? I live here and haven't been there in what seems like years, at least as it relates to hanging out before/during/after a college football game.

If you come to Columbia stick to forest acres, downtown or the vista. Everywhere else is either unremarkable or hood as frick.
