I first heard/saw about this in the early 2000s on message boards when UGA fans were feeling themselves about turning the tide in that series. But the two teams almost never played before 1992 (even weirder). Is it just proximity that makes it a rivalry? From living in TN a little while, I didn't get the impression UF-UT was really a rivalry either, just a case of two teams at the top battling for an extended period (like LSU-Bama)

the UT/UGA games are usually good ones and they are bordering states...also, I think Georgia has been trying to steal Tennessee's water

the series is like 24-23 UGA since they started playing

UGA and Bama colluded with each other in the 60-70-80s to not play each other and UGA didnt play Tennessee that much either prior to 1992

Scheduling prior to 1972 I think was really non structured. The SEC had 13 teams at inception (1935) and until 1965 had 12 (Tulane and GA. Tech). So the only requirement was that teams you did not play every year, you play them like once in like 12 years. In the 50's, LSU played Ole Miss, Florida, MSU, State every year and played Alabama more often (11 games played between 1935 and 1963; played every year since 1964) along with Kentucky (13 times between 35-63, all starting in 1949) and then played TENN, UGA, Auburn, GA. Tech and Vandy on rotating type basis. Hence the reason LSU/TENN have played 35 or so times all-time.

Starting in 1972, the 10 team SEC went to a 5-1 schedule, 5 Permanent, for LSU (Bama, Florida, UK, Ole Miss and State) and rotation among TENN/UGA/Vandy/Auburn. LSU played TENN in 73-74 then next time was 82/83, etc. Around 87, the league went to 7 Games, 5 permanent and 2 rotation so LSU played TENN in 87/88 then again in 90/91 I think.

Georgia made it a point to dodge the two SEC powerhouses prior to divisions.

Yep. The Bear and Dooley were afraid to play each other and take an L. Doesn't surprise me.

Also to a degree UGA has rivalry fatigue with Fla, Tech and Aub. For a while it might have been said Clemson was our biggest rival. But UT is in the mix. They recruit hard in GA and there's been some bad blood over the years.

I mean everybody pretty much hated Fulmer and it was hard to not hate Kiffin too when he was at UT, so that made UT a rival for us. Kiffin humiliated uga and rubbed it in. It's been a streaky series. UT won eight in a row, then we mostly split in the 2000s and uga dominated the 2010s. It's got all the makings of a rivalry it's just uga has too many other rivals.

Played every year for nearly 30 years creates a rivalry, especially when the inferior program thinks it’s their god given right to be better than uga.

Georgia is a big-game and certainly are foes in recruiting, but not exactly a rivalry from our standpoint. It's hard to consider a small timer program like UGA a rival when they haven't even won a national title in my lifetime.

It's not like UGA is good in basketball or any other sport that matters.

Well yeah. Urban sprawl be real yo.

If Tennessee stopped supplying water to Georgia and the Atlanta metro area returned to a pre-1996ish population, I'd put on some orange UTK gear and help those Vols pick up trash on the side of the road.

I guess its a competition to hold Florida's purse.

Tennessee recruits Georgia heavily so it’s a big game yearly. Maybe not a historical rivalry. Georgia, Clemson and Auburn have been doing a better job than Tennessee recruiting Georgia players for some time

. I thought that was over, the Georgia governor vetoed a bill meant to claim the land in dispute. From what I understand Georgia was in the wrong on that issue

I mean of course they were. It was nonsensical bat-shite craziness. You can't just march into another state and claim their water sources because you say so.

Is there such a thing as too many rivals?

I thought the water fight was FL. trying to claim water from streams/lakes/rivers in Ga..

Isn't that what Fl. was trying to do a few years ago in Ga.?

That's a different dispute. The Tennessee dispute is equally based on bullshite. It is Georgia's water.
