How important is the S&C program to the success of a football program?
People talk about Bama's success the past ten years or so. Could they have done it with a different S&C coach? Is it all just Saban magic and 5* talent?
Who are the best S&C coaches out there and what sets them apart?
I've seen comments from strength gurus like Rippetoe suggesting many S&C coaches are pretty retarded and places like Westside Barbell churn out some of the world's strongest people routinely. None of them employ smoothie bars, iPad training logs, ultra bling equipment, or palacial facilities. Are college S&C just cheerleaders that scream a lot or do they know their stuff?

Strength and conditioning is very important to your football program and it's success. Idk who the best are, but I'm sure that the best teams in the country have the best strength and conditioning coaches. It's a priority.

Yes and fat coaches rub off their laziness on players.
FWIW our S&C under Bert got fired today iirc

Super important. At some point I saw a pic comparing UT players today vs late 90s. Crazy.
Also, s&c coaches are able to have work with players during non-practice times. They are important for a HCs communication.

If you want to see the results of having an optional S&C program go look at 2012 Auburn. Chizik at his finest!!!

I’ll say one good thing about Mullen. He brought in Florida’s S&C coach when he arrived in 2009 and dude made an immediate impact on the appearance of our players. He left to take much higher paying gig at another university and Mullen brought in Cort and he continued the development of our players. They are the most important off season coach because they spend a lot more time with the players then the actual on-field coaches do because of NCAA regulations limiting the amount of time the players can practice. They are the coaches who keep these kids in shape during the off season and have them ready to go at Spring training. So all-in-all I would say they are probably the most important coach after your DC and OC.

Scott Cochran is the best in the business at BAMA. He is payed like an in the field assistant coach at mist schools. Say what you want about BAMA getting all 5 star dudes, but just look at how those kids bodies change during their time there.

Sounds, so far, as if S&C is like babysitting and cheerleading, like maybe the best results are coming from the guys that fail to get lazy and not because of a great acumen.
These players are generally gifted in terms of skill and size and are at a prime time for growth in their lifespan. Are S&C coaches taking advantage of that predisposition for growth, or are they actually making a difference?

Scott Cochran is the best and I hope whoever we hire has the equivalent of Cochran's cocaine budget because that dude's crazy

According to the Auburn board, every time a important player gets injured, we need to fire ours and get a new one so it must be Important

Mickey Marotti? He's now at Ohio State.
If Nick Savage is still your S&C coach he worked under Marotti for a few years.

A S&C coach is very important. How does your team look in the 4th qtr?
Read up on Boyd Epley at Nebraska.

Heard that a lot on the Georgia board after the 2013 season when we had so many injuries. IT was all on S&C.

Tommy Moffitt at LSU is a pretty good one. Has been there since 2000, has helped put roughly 100 Tigers into the NFL, and was Scott Cochran's mentor. He gets plenty of shite on the rant, but he is certainly one of the better S&C coaches in the country.

I was worried about Ryan Russell at AU but we seem to be in the top few teams in the SEC as far as physical play. Bama, UGA, AU, and LSU seem to have a different look to their players compared to the rest of the league.

Look at Scott Cochran

the s&c guys spend more time with the team than the coaches do. they are basically in charge of the team during the off season. so it's not just strength and conditioning, or how the bodies look after being in the program.
a tip-o-the-hat to these guys, they're year round

Most underrated position on staff IMO and a key component to Bamas success in the last decade.
