But then other programs (FSU, Tenn, etc.)seem to always shite the bed?

And lets not forget: each hire was a risky hire withsome controversy.

Any one have a thoughtas to why?

Hard to not say that LSU has had the most interesting coaching run of the last two decades.

Coach O made 2 bold and excellent coordinator hires. Kirby went inhouse for both of ours' The DC is working out fine, Kirby will always oversee his defense. The OC hire was weak though.

It's more about the program than it is the coach.

LSU is the easiest place to build a solid program in the country.

Louisiana produces a ton of talent and they don't have to share the state with another Power program (such as Alabama/Auburn sharing a state). They also have Ocean to the South, Mississippi and Arkansas to the North (which are not a threat), and while they border Texas to the West, the distance between Texas & Texas A&M and the main population centers of Louisiana are so far, they aren't much of a threat either.

They have passionate fans and a unique scene. They have tradition, history, etc.

Those other schools you mentioned have their issues:

Tennessee- Their issue is lack of in-state talent, and often the talent that does come out of it is in Memphis which is about as close to Dallas as it is Knoxville.

Florida State- I think their issue is sharing a state with Florida and Miami.... plus Georgia, Alabama, and Auburn frequently sign talent from Florida. Being in the ACC is probably somewhat of a detriment when it comes to attracting some talent. A lot of kids would rather play in the SEC, etc.

I don't think FSU's issues are nearly as serious as UT's.
