How good is your coaching staff at developing low-star players?

Serious question...not trying to get any attention or anything. KS has done a pretty good job developing 'under-the-radar' guys; aside from Bennett, Jordan Davis was a 3 star recruit. Ladd McConkey was the 187th WR recruit in the nation.

Is it good recruiting to find these diamonds in the rough, or is it development in the S&C program, etc?

Who is the success stories for your team as far as the walk-on turned star players?

The whole concept of developing low star players is dumb. Theres a ton of low star players who are just awesome from the jump

Jaylen Foster was a walk on that became first team all SEC safety.

I think really this is a position group thing. our Dline coach (now LSU's) regressed Dline talent, but our secondary coach puts people in the league. Otherwise our talent ends up about where it should

I think covid had this effect to some extent (Ladd mcconkey, AD Mitchell).

But there really are other ways to look at it.

There are low star players who are athletic freaks but extremely raw out of high school (Jordan Davis, Eric stokes).

And there are players who are just ballers but don't have the athletic traits to stand out in an underwear olympics (Javon Bullard was the 82nd best CB in his high school class. Jamon Dumas-Johnson was the 31st best ILB in his high school class)

That's Stoops bread and butter. Josh Allen is a good example of it. He was committed to Monmouth at one point as a 2* product.

Quinnen Williams, Marcel Dareus and Mac Jones were all rated outside the top 20 at the position groups in HS.

Williams and Dareus were top 5 picks and Jones was top 15

I thought Mac Jones was ranked pretty high. Didn't realize he was ranked low.

Read 'meansonny's post below. There are some players that are raw or in McConkey's case, he played every freakun position on his team. That's probably the reason he was ranked so low. Anyway, they do need to have their skills honed and developed. Heck, it took Jordan Davis a couple of years to get to where he was a first round talent.

Solid 3 star.
17th best pro style QB in his class (that ignores dual threats).

One of Tommy Tuberville's strengths at AU.

Uh...correct me if I'm wrong; wasn't Rashad Jones, SS who ended up in the NFL a walk-on mid-2000s that didn't get ANY big school offers and walked on at Bama?

It was a strength of Jeremy Pruitt at UGA. Lots of 3 stars playing like 4 stars.

Unfortunately, it was those 3 stars who weren't capable of handling NFL Sunday players in 2017 and 2018 (i.e. against Bama).

I'm huge a Jamon Dumas Johnson and Javon Bullard fan. As of today, I don't see them getting the NFL draft love typical of an underclassman who garners national collegiate accolades.

You don't think Dumas will be a high draft pick? I dunno, man, he's 245, runs like a cat and can lay the wood. Him and Mondon might be the best 2 ILBs in the nation IMHO.

Cedric Tillman 2*
Jalin Hyatt 3*
Hooker low 4*

Both drafted. Both had more yards there last year with UT under Heupel than they had for entire career up till last year. Hooker wasn’t on anyone’s draft boards at Virginia Tech. In fact Hooker wasn’t even starting anymore at Tech so he hit the portal and came to UT where Heupel revived his career.

He's not a cat. Straight line speed is good. Maybe very good for his size.

Turn his hips and it isn't good. He is straight as an arrow which means the offense has to run into him on downfield throws. Any quality route running or agility shakes him.

That stuff matters in the NFL. Athletically, he and Mondon are nothing alike.

They may be the 2 best college linebackers in the nation. But the NFL is a different game.

I regress...I'm just a measly chaplain, what do I know? Actually, some fellow UGA fans on another forum I frequent said some of the same things you're saying; not alot of lateral speed, like Mondon. Now, Mondon is from my hometown here in Dallas, Georgia and the only weakness I see in that kid is he's a bit injury prone. A coach I'm friends with here in the county at another HS told me he knew Chris Conley (North Paulding) personally and said Mondon was a better overall athlete than he was.

Conley was a freak. That's cool.

It has been said that Mondon is the most athletic linebacker that Kirby has ever had.

As for JDJ, he has straight line speed. He won't blow anyone away in the 40. But "for his size" which is over 240, he stands out.

He can cover sideline to sideline with the best of them. He can blitz with the best of them.

Watch him against our best P5 opponents (LSU, Ohio State) and you will see where he struggles in coverage.
He doesn't overrun plays in run support. I don't think he overruns plays against screens.
But get him going backwards, and he overruns everything. The offense has to get in his way for him to make the play.

Ladd McConkey
averaged 50 yards a game, or 153 per game in the NCAA. Not really a “diamond”.
