How far back in time would you have to go for Alabama to beat an NFL team? 20 yrs? 30 yrs?

So, this year’s Alabama team would beat the 1967 Green Bay Packers. Badly. But, what about the 1985 Bears? The size difference is significant. Chicago’s OLine is only in the 260s and 270s. William “Refrigerator” Perry was 6-2, 320. That is common now.

It seems like modern top college teams would overwhelm pro teams from the 80s. But, would they?

How far back would you have to go for this year’s Alabama team to beat an NFL team?

I know this seems like an off-season thread, but I was watching MNF and they showed some old NFL clips and the thought crossed my mind.

Wasn’t that the year all the talk about beating the browns started?

The college all stars were beating NFL teams fairly recently. I would think bama would be better than a random all star team.

85 Bears would shut out Bama

no modern college team would beat any nfl team from the 80
to answer your question I think you have to go back to 60's because in the 70's salaries exploded and the nfl was able to get better pro athletes that previously opted for other sports such as baseball.

We know that Alabama would not beat the worst team in the NFL this year. But, when would they? With advances in physical conditioning, how far back do you have to go?

Based on training and nutrition advances the last 10-20 years, you’d probably have several high teams that could beat NFL teams from the 40’s or 50’s. Those guys would smoke half a pack of unfiltered Pall Malls at halftime.

Alabama is MUCH bigger on both lines than the 85 Bears. How is Chicago going to shut out Alabama when they are outweighed by 30-50 pounds all over both lines?

Totally false. You don’t think this 2018 Alabama team couldn’t beat an NFL team from the 70s? They couldn’t beat the 1980 1-15 Saints? Why not? The physical abilities of the two teams are night and day.

I take it you aren't old to have seen them play?

I was a kid, but I saw them play. They were dominant. I just don’t know how they deal with the size of Alabama’s lines.

I was 12, and I remember them clearly. Best defense I have ever seen. I mean there is no way to know but when you think about pro athletes who get up, work out, go to practice for 3 hours, take a lunch, a nap, then work out again, and then go back to practice for 3 more hours. Vs college athletes, who have not yet peaked physical, but they get up go to class, then practice for 3 hours in the afternoon. So to answer your question, they would overcome the weight difference with experience, speed, and endurance. There were offensive lines almost as big as Bama's in the NFL in 85, and they had no problem shutting them down. Monsters of the midway.

In this thought experiment, if you took this years Bama team or any college team, back to the 70s or even 60s in your time machine, you best to explain the rules to these bigger, stronger players of today. Those players were vicious, chop blocks, head shots and no such thing as a defenseless player. Receivers would get ripped in half. There would be blood.

No modern qb(i mean nfl or college) would likely even finish the game. They wouldn't know how to take all of those hits.

Teams from the 60s and 70s would be a lot smaller than Bama.

Humans have only been as large as they are now for the last 20 years or so. All the breakthroughs in sports science is putting a different kind of athlete on the field now.

Bama OL and DL would be bigger, faster, and stronger than anything in the NFL back then I 'd be willing to wager.

Interesting thought, OP.
