I expect South Carolina to be much improved. Muschamp is stooge in some ways, but the dude can coach a defense. Year 2 they'll be better and maybe the best in the East, if they can develop some talent.

Your team gave up 682 yards to Tennessee last year...

Auburn returns 9/11 starters from a defense that was top 25 in total defense and top 10 in scoring

Auburn's defense is being underrated ITT

Are you kidding, we love that game. Sure, it's wasted time every year teaching a new set of kids how to defend an offense they see once per season, and it also happens right before the SECCG. Sure, every new defensive coordinator has to dedicate a large block of his precious time to learning how to defend it. Sure, we've gotten guys dinged up the week before the SEC championship game which hurt our depth in that most important game of the year. And of course, we do give up a lot of scheduling flexibility that could be used for some nice OOC matchups or extra home games.

But..., it is the most important rivalry game in the country that absolutely no one else in America cares about. Plus, some of our fans really enjoy their water cooler/message board smack talk talk with the nerds. So, all in all, we think it's a really good tradeoff.

I know Lawson and Adams were drafted. Are those the only starters Auburn lost on defense? That bodes well.

I won't say best in the East: Muschamp and staff has had to take the defense from too far in such a short time. In 2015 USC's defense was either 13th or 14th in the conference in most every statistical category.

Last season the new staff took a squad very thin in talent and made it into a middling defense at best: didn't finish last in the SEC in ANY category (6th pass D, 9th rush D, 8th scoring D, 7th total D).

The unit will have improved depth in the secondary and playing experience in most areas. The DL will be inexperienced at DE and thin behind the starters, but the LBs and secondary will have solid to excellent experience as well as excellent talent to go with it.

I expect the defense to be around similar to last season, perhaps a bit better but not much, with slight improvements in consistency. We will need some young DE to step up and surprise people. The big thing is I also expect the offense to improve substantially over last season's version....

We did also lose Rudy Ford. But Tray Matthews, Stephen Roberts, and Nick Ruffin all have starting experience at safety and extensive playing time for multiple seasons.

We also lost Josh Holsey who wasn't technically a starter last season, but he did had extensive starting experience in his career at Auburn (31 career starts but most coming in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Missed 2015 with an injury and then for passed up as a starter last season)

All 4 of those guys were drafted and were pretty good.
But for all intents and purposes Auburn returns 9/11 starter on defense.

Yeah not sold on LSU's defensive backs. Will need to see great things from the front 7.

Florida lost just as much or more on defense than LSU did. At least I think so. Both still should be good though. Both teams just reload.

I definitely think Carolina's offense (staying on the field and putting up points) will be the biggest help for our defense this season. Since we'll be relying heavily on juco and freshmen to contribute this season I expect the growing pains to continue for another year.

Overall this group is still lacking the talent level to be at the top of the SEC this year. My prediction is another average (middle of the pack) group that could be worse if injuries occur to any of our key guys.

We return 8 full-time starters from 2016. 9 positions return starters.... there are more than 9 with "starting experience" though.

Either way, it's a better defense than LSU

I'll miss Monty way more than I'll miss Lawson. Lawson got hyped up before every single game and,IMO, rarely delivered to that level in which he was hyped.

I would say 8/11.

Rudy Ford, Mon Adams and Carl Lawson were starters that left.

Both were kind of disappointments until last season. And both played great all last season.

But Adams will be easier to replace this season. We are stacked at DT, and Monty's heir, Derrick Brown has a higher ceiling and showed a much better motor and consistent effort last season than Monty did his whole first 3 seasons.
