If the LSU job was to come open, where would it rank in comparison to USC? With upcoming SEC expansion & CFP expansion every SEC job should increase in prestige & overall desirability. The lure of a weak conference may be appealing to some but USC doesn't own recruiting in their own back yard.

USC is USC. They are the PAC 12 essentially though Oregon is gaining ground and UCLA is getting a revival of sorts.
LSU is at best 2nd fiddle in the SEC West.

So I guess my next question would be: Is the prestige of the "PAC 12" more desirable than LSU

At USC, the right guy could essentially lock down recruiting in Southern California, which most years would be an extremely strong class. At LSU, it’s my opinion, you are centered around better and more high school football players. I think the expectations are higher at LSU. It takes a certain personality to flourish at either of these places.

I'd have it above USC. Last 3 coaches have won championships there. Overall recruiting has been on a top 5 level. A lot of attrition and high expectations though.
USC is obviously a better location and the potential is huge. Don't have to go through Saban to win the conference, but their last couple of recruiting classes have been bad. Feel like currently, LSU is in better shape.

Any program in the SEC, especially those in the west, I think will struggle to get a top tier coach while Saban is at UA. We got lucky with the hire and what he has been able to do since he has been here but it seems to many SEC programs are using that as the standard now. Even his replacement at UA will never be able to match that for as long as Saban has.
Without Saban at UA LSU in my opinion would be a top destination, though partly because of Saban's tenure there. The program has the facilities, the fan base, and is in the best conference.

I don't think they are far apart. LSU has had some real success the last 25 years. However, with the talent base in SoCal and having a much easier road to have a chance at a championship puts USC above.
As conference expansion increases and leads to the break away from NCAA, this could change IMO. It would all depend on the PAC12's actions to keep up with the SEC.

LSU. Football is dying on the left coast. It is a societal thing and nothing can be done to reverse.
Football in the Southeast and Southwest will live on until the end.

Honestly…. Quality of life and safety for the family should come into play. So… Baton Rouge of 2021. Ewwwww.

LSU is where you would go if you were really about that life. USC is too far removed from the heart of college football at this point.

20 or more years ago? Absolutely.
Now? Nope, and it's not close.

The LSU job is better than the USC IMO.....

I may be in a minority but I don't think of Sou Cal being all that. If you look at their history, John McKay had great success in the 1970s and Pete Carroll in the early 2000s. Every other coach they have had has been fired and run out of town.
I think it may be a cultural thing but football on the left coast is not what it used to be and my never be again.
I feel the same way about the job at U of Texas. Everyone talks what a great job it is but since Royal retired about 45 years ago they have had limited success. Mack Brown in the early 2000s but every other coach has been run out of town, including Mack Brown when they got tired of him.

Let's look at factors I consider relevant to a coaching job:
1. Money
2. Local recruiting pool
3. Good conference affiliation
4. Hands-off booster approach
5. Somewhat patient alum/fan base - or reasonable expectations
6. Recent history and tradition
LSU beats the shite out of USC in at least 4 of those categories.

This is basically another way of saying which programs are the best. Personally, I think the best job is coaching at a school that isn't known as a powerhouse because the fans are a little less ridiculous if you lose a few games.
Some examples:
Kirk Ferentz, Iowa: 22 years (168-106 record at Iowa, 180-127 career record)
Gary Patterson, TCU: 20 years (178-74 record)
Kyle Whittingham, Utah: 16 years (134-66 record)
Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State: 16 years (137-67 record)

Remember, you go to coach a team. Sure, conference "prestige" is important but so is the team. I'd say for a lot of coaches, USC is a choice destination. LSU less so but it's not like LSU is Mizzou or some school like that.

USC job is overrated IMO. LSU is a way better job and it’s not even close.

Not sure about South Central. What I do know is this:

Personally I would take the LSU job right now because the fans love football there. A hot crowd is a great recruiting tool.
So. Cal fans have always, always, been a very fickle bunch. When you are hot, sure, they will pack the stands. But an 8-4 season, not wonderful but not complete arse, and you will be lucky to have half the stadium filled. Its not just college football... Los Angeles has run off a lot of really good NFL teams.
Talent is a toss up. LSU might have a slight advantage in that LSU pretty much rules the state. Sure some folks get poached, but by and large the Bayou Bengals get who they want in their home state.
With USC you know that every program, and I do mean every program, on or near the West Coast is fishing in your waters... and fishing in your waters with some success. There is a ton of talent out there, just a ton of it, but with 20 or more universities all grabbing someone that makes keeping talent at home a lot tougher.
I would take the LSU job. You can win a national title at either school but I'd lean towards LSU being more desirable.
