In what criteria?

A. Overall record - just straight up counting wins, losses, trophies, etc

B. Expectation - what should happen at the program, but not reflective of reality

C. Fan arrogance - a fanbase dead set that their program is the greatest, but nowhere near that claim

Probably going to get a few different answers.

Vandy was practically a powerhouse in the early years of college football. In the SIAA and Southern Conferences, Vandy won a combined 13 titles. If you use combined titles, they're only 3 behind Auburn and LSU (each with 16 combined titles between the three conferences) and 2 behind Georgia (15 combined). Vandy was leading all current SEC teams in total titles for a while. For example, Alabama didn't reach 13 combined titles until 1966. LSU didn't reach that point until 2003.

You have to go with Vandy. Yes, they won a pile of conference titles before the SEC was ever formed, but they've never won an SEC title or won or shared even a division title. They've been to 9 bowl games in their entire history, and have only ever won 4 bowl games EVER.

Yes, Miss. State only has one SEC title and one division title, but they've been to Atlanta, a claim that even Ole Miss can't make. They've been to 23 bowls (winning 13 of them), which may be a better measure of success given that only one team can win the SEC title in any year.

I can only recall three Vandy winning seasons in my lifetime: 2008 when they got Tubs canned and the two James Franklin years. LSU hired Gerry DiNardo bc going 5-6 there in the early 90s was seen as a big accomplishment (also I think he beat UGA)
